More details about Timothée Chalamet's A Complete Unknown
A Complete Unknown revisits the early years of Bob Dylan, from his arrival in New York in 1961 to the electric shock that changed music forever at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. Directed by James Mangold and co-written with Jay Cocks, the film draws inspiration from Elijah Wald’s Dylan Goes Electric! and reimagines the singer’s transformation from scrappy folk poet to rock revolutionary. Timothée Chalamet not only steps into the role of Dylan but also co-produced the film, joined by a stellar cast that includes Edward Norton, Elle Fanning, Monica Barbaro, Boyd Holbrook, and Dan Fogler.
Mangold described his film not as a strict biography but “a portrait of an era,” a story about reinvention, rebellion, and the restless spirit that redefined American music. Speaking about the film at the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, the director said,
"It's not really a Bob Dylan biopic. It's a kind of ensemble piece about this moment in time in the early '60s in New York ... and this wanderer who comes in from Minnesota with a fresh name and a fresh outlook on life [and] becomes a star."
The film's heart lies in it's music, Chalamet performed 40 Dylan songs live on set, singing and playing guitar and harmonica without studio dubbing or earpieces. Apart from him, Norton, Barbaro, and Holbrook also performed their own musical numbers. Recording for the music of the film, led by Timothée Chalamet took place at The Village and Sunset Sound in Los Angeles using vintage instruments and microphones sourced from Dylan’s original Columbia Records sessions. The soundtrack, released through Columbia Records on December 20, 2024, includes classics like Like a Rolling Stone, Mr. Tambourine Man, The Times They Are a-Changin’, and Highway 61 Revisited.
A Complete Unknown is available to stream on Prime Video.
