Actor Timothée Chalamet will receive the David di Donatello award. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this award is of the same value as the Oscars. Specifically, Chalamet will receive the David Award for his “cinematic excellence.” The award ceremony will take place in Rome on May 7, 2025.

Elena Sofia Ricci and Mika will serve as the hosts for the award ceremony. As per a statement by the Italian Academy’s President, Piera Detassis:

“Timothee Chalamet’s European origins and American background make him one of the most unpredictable and talented protagonists of international cinema today, capable of being both an auteur performer and a star generating trends and styles.”

She went on:

“The Academy is delighted to award him the David for Cinematic Excellence, which is meant to be an acknowledgement of the great actor of quality and innovative films, and, at the same time, of the global protagonist.”

Piera Detassis emphasized that it was the Italian film Call Me by Your Name, directed by Luca Guadagnino, that brought Timothée Chalamet international fame. She highlighted how the film served as a powerful and modern meeting point of cultures and perspectives, something the David di Donatello Awards were proud to honor.

At 22, Chalamet got his first Oscar nomination for Call Me by Your Name. However, his second Oscar nomination came in 2025 for A Complete Unknown, a musical biopic on Bob Dylan.

Timothee Chalamet on acting and working with directors

In 2018, Timothée Chalamet appeared on the BAFTA Guru, where he spoke about his experiences in his acting journey. He shared that one of the most important lessons he learned in drama school was to be honest and emotionally open.

He believed vulnerability was key to connecting with audiences and that this openness could help people relate to or heal from their own experiences. He felt this was especially true in Call Me by Your Name. The actor said:

“The experience working with Luca Guadagnino is different than the experience working with Greta Gerwig was different than the experience working with Christopher Nolan. And as an actor particularly if you're not the leader of the project you try to make yourself as clay-like as malleable as possible.”

Chalamet explained that a good connection was helpful on set because it allowed actors to feel comfortable without fear of being judged. He said acting requires sensitivity, and feeling at ease helps with emotional expression.

He also emphasized the importance of being a supportive scene partner, knowing when to offer encouragement, when to give space, and how to contribute positively to the overall team. Reflecting on what made him want to be an actor, he said:

“I heard someone say to me once before like he can be stapling papers or it can be playing the piano or it could be acting. I think when you lose yourself when you find that certain feeling that's just exciting and more exciting than you know being at home eight hours before you do the scene.”

Timothée Chalamet shared that during the final scene of Call Me by Your Name, where Mr. Perlman gives an emotional speech, he usually preferred knowing the lines that came after his for pacing.
