Tobey Maguire is taking steps to update custody arrangements for his teenage son, nearly nine years after announcing his separation from Jennifer Meyer. According to court documents obtained by Us Weekly on August 1, Maguire, 50, filed on July 31 for joint legal and physical custody of his and Meyer’s 15-year-old son, Otis.
Maguire’s filing responds to Meyer’s initial divorce petition, which she filed in 2020, four years after the couple first revealed they were ending their marriage. In addition to requesting joint custody, Maguire asked that child and spousal support be determined privately through mediation.
The actor and the jewelry designer met in 2003 and tied the knot in Hawaii in 2007. They announced their separation in October 2016 after nine years of marriage. Together, they also share a daughter, Ruby, who is now 18.

When Tobey Maguire and Meyer confirmed their split in 2016, they released a joint statement emphasizing that their family would remain their priority.
“After much soul searching and consideration we have made the decision to separate as a couple,” they said to Us Weekly at the time. “As devoted parents, our first priority remains raising our children together with enduring love, respect and friendship.”
Two years later, Meyer told Us Weekly that Tobey Maguire was still her “best friend” and called him “the greatest ex-husband a girl could ever have.” She explained that co-parenting their children was at the center of their lives.
“The day begins with the kids and ends with the kids,” Meyer said in January 2018. “So you manage to get your time in and work hard in the middle, you know? They’re really amazing kids, so we figure it out together. It just manages to work out really well.”
Meyer officially filed for divorce in November 2020. In 2022, she again spoke warmly about Maguire during an appearance on The World’s First Podcast.
“I can’t even explain. I would literally do anything in the world for Tobey,” she said. “He is my brother. I love him to death and we have the most beautiful family.”
Meyer has since moved on, confirming her engagement to Geoffrey Ogunlesi, son of Nigerian billionaire Adebayo Ogunlesi, in September 2024. Meanwhile, Maguire was most recently linked to model Lily Chee. Despite their new chapters, Tobey Maguire and Meyer continue to reunite for family milestones. In May, Meyer posted photos from Ruby’s high school graduation, writing,
“Congratulations Ruby!!!!! ♥️ Graduate of our dreams. We are so proud of you in every way. We love love love love love you baby 🥰♥️.”
