Tom Cruise has been acting since the early 1980s and has been a part of several commercially successful and critically acclaimed films. This includes names like the Mission: Impossible franchise, Top Gun, Rain Man, A Few Good Men, Minority Report and Collateral among others.
After years of contributing to the medium, Cruise is finally getting an Honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards for his long contribution in the world of cinema and his work towards the community of stunts. The actor was recently seen in Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning where he reprised the role of Ethan Hunt.
Tom Cruise to get Honorary Oscar
Tom Cruise will be receiving the Honorary Oscar at the 16th edition of the Governors Awards. The ceremony will take place on November 16, 2025. The Academy has stated that they are bestowing the actor with the honor for his "commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and to the stunts community."
Cruise will be getting the honor along with other individuals like Wynn Thomas, Debbie Allen as well as Dolly Parton (who won the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award).
Cruise has emerged as a superstar in Hollywood because of his box-office draw over the years. His 2022 film Top Gun: Maverick ended up grossing $1.496 billion, becoming the highest-grossing film of his career. Cruise recently reprised his role as the IMF agent Ethan Hunt, possibly for the last time, in Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning. Besides acting, Cruise has also produced several films, including the two titles mentioned above.
Tom Cruise's career has parallels with the journey of Hunt. Prior to the film's release, the actor wrote,
“Over 30 years ago, I began the journey of producing my first film, Mission: Impossible. Since then, these eight films have taken me on the adventure of a lifetime”.
He added,
"To the incredible directors, actors, artists, and crews across the globe that have helped bring these stories to life, I thank you. It has been a privilege to work alongside you all. Most importantly, I want to thank the audience, for whom it is our great pleasure to create these films, and for whom we all serve. We’re thrilled to share The Final Reckoning with you."
Despite having a long and successful career, Cruise doesn't plan to retire anytime soon. Speaking to Rolling Stone, the actor revealed that he wants to do musicals when asked about his bucket list.
“Definitely musicals. Drama, action, adventures. It’s endless. My goals are endless.”
Tom Cruise started his acting career in 1981 with the romantic drama Endless Love and has since done leading roles in films of varied genres.
