Miley Cyrus recently shared emotional insight regarding her reconciliation with her family’s complex history. The pop star shed light on where she stands with her parents, Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus. Speaking on The Interview, a New York Times podcast released Saturday, May 31, the singer and actress opened up about the emotional journey she’s been on since her parents' separation.
“As I’ve gotten older, I’m respecting my parents as individuals instead of as parents — because my mom’s really loved my dad for her whole life, and I think being married to someone in the music industry and not being a part of it is obviously really hard,” said Cyrus.
Her explanation added how deeply she identified with her mother’s pain.
“I think I took on some of my mom’s hurt as my own because it hurt her more than it hurt me as an adult, and so I owned a lot of her pain.”
Miley Cyrus opens up about healing after her parents' divorce

Billy Ray and Tish tied the knot in 1993 and divorced in 2022. According to Miley Cyrus, she healed in stages, and what helped the healing process the most was seeing her parents move on in their personal lives. Her mom married actor Dominic Purcell, and Bill Ray Cyrus has made headlines with his reported romance with actress and model Elizabeth Hurley.
“But now that my mom is so in love with my stepdad, who I completely adore, and now that my dad, I see him finding happiness, too—I can love them both as individuals instead of as a parental pairing,” said Miley Cyrus.
Still, the emotional transition wasn’t instant.
“I’m being an adult about it. At first it’s hard, because the little kid in you reacts before the adult in you can go, ‘Yes, that’s your dad, but that’s just another person that deserves to be in his bliss and to be happy, my child self has caught up.” she shared.
When Miley Cyrus showed up with Billy Ray Cyrus to mark her brother Braison’s birthday, many fans began to wonder if the two were starting to rebuild their bond. The father and daughter relationship had reportedly grown distant in the wake of Billy Ray’s 2022 divorce. At the time, sources told E! News that Miley found it “hard to connect” with him. That emotional distance seemed especially apparent during her first Grammy win last year, when she didn’t mention her father in her acceptance speech, even though he had allegedly tried to reach out.
In an interview with The Times, Miley Cyrus reflected on the public’s ongoing interest in her family dynamics.
“I just try to be more compassionate to my parents, because I hate that for them,” she said. “I mostly hate it for my siblings because they didn’t choose that kind of highlight on themselves. But for me, I’ve gotten so used to it that I’m like, ‘If this is the symptom — that sometimes we deal with these embarrassing or difficult public opinions — then that’s something I’m willing to take to have the life that we have."
Miley's conversation on The Interview podcast also turned to her personal opinions and ideas regarding being a parent.
“I feel that way about motherhood. It’s just never been something that I’ve been overly passionate about. It’s a lot of responsibility and devotion and energy, and if you’re not passionate about that, I don’t know how you do sleepless nights and 18 years of what my mom dealt with.” she shared.
