Unknown Number: The High School Catfish - The person behind those texts revealed
Unknown Number: The High School Catfish focuses on a teenage girl, Lauryn, and her boyfriend, Owen. The two lived in Beal City, Michigan, and in 2021, Lauryn started receiving weird messages on her phone. The messages said that Owen was breaking up with her and that he liked the sender more. As time passed, the messages got more lewd and went on to say that Owen would leave her because she couldn't satisfy him.
The messages addressed Lauryn as Lo, which was her nickname. This established that the sender was someone she knew. The couple eventually broke up, hoping that the messages would stop. But they didn't. Even after the breakup, Lauryn would get the messages, and this time, they would tell her to end her life.
In January 2022, the authorities began investigating the case, and the FBI got involved in April. In the documentary, Bradley Peter, an FBI agent, revealed that they found out that the messages were sent by Kendra Licari, Lauryn's mother.
In Unknown Number: The High School Catfish, Kendra reveals that her behavior came from the fact that she was assaulted at the age of 17. She said that she got scared as Lauryn hit her teen years. Kendra didn't want to let her go and was afraid to lose her.
However, Kendra didn't answer why she provoked her daughter to kill herself. There is also a possibility that she was secretly attracted to Lauryn's boyfriend, Owen. The latter even says that Kendra would check on him frequently when he was seeing her daughter.
As the documentary concludes, we see Kendra coming out of jail. Lauryn, who has maintained distance from her since, grew closer to her father. Lauryn confesses that she loves her mother, but she would want her to get the help she needed.
Unknown Number: The High School Catfish is streaming on Netflix. The executive producers of the film include Skye Borgman, Tom Forman, Ross Girard, David Metzler, Alysia Sofios, and Justin Sprague.
