A Christmas Carol is getting a film adaptation soon. A novel by Charles Dickens, published in 1843; it's story revolves around Ebenezer Scrooge, an old man who is reluctant to spend money. Several ghosts, including his ex-business partner Jacob Marley and others, visit him, ultimately leading to a transformation in his character.

Warner Bros. has reportedly ordered its film adaptation, which will be directed by Robert Eggers, known for making several films in the horror genre. Let’s find out the details of this project that might excite horror fans and those who have enjoyed Eggers’ work.

Robbert Eggers to direct A Christmas Carol film adaptation

The Hollywood Reporter has stated that Warner Bros. has hired Robert Eggers to direct the forthcoming film adaptation of A Christmas Carol. Besides taking up the directorial responsibilities, Eggers will also be writing its script and will be producing it with Eleanor Columbus and Chris Columbus under the banner of Maiden Voyage.

William Dafoe's name has been rumored to be cast as Ebenezer Scrooge, the old miser and main protagonist of Dickens' novel. It was earlier adapted into an animated feature film, which came out in 2009, directed by Robert Zemeckis. The story has also been adapted into a long format British television series starring Guy Pearce.

Eggers made his feature film debut with the 2015 period folk horror film The Witch. It was also the acting debut of Anya Taylor-Joy and ended up becoming a critical and commercial success. Eggers continued with another horror film called The Lighthouse. Starring Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson, the film was shot in black and white and was released in 2019. It was followed by the 2022 epic action film The Northman and 2024's horror film Nosferatu. The latter was a remake of the namesake 1922 film. Eggers has worked only in the horror and period space and might continue to do so with A Christmas Carol.

In a January 2025 interview with Rotten Tomatoes, the director said that he won't make a film set in the modern era. He said:

“The idea of having to photograph a car makes me ill and the idea of photographing a cellphone is just death. And to make a contemporary story you have to photograph a cellphone — it’s just how life is — so no [I won’t be making any modern-set films].”

In a separate interview, Eggers was asked about the possibility of how modern his story could be.

“I don’t know. I might go potentially to 1950 but before World War II is more inviting for my imagination.”
