Betty Bayo, real name Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua, succumbed to leukemia at Kenyatta National Hospital on November 10, 2025. She will be dearly missed within the Kenyan gospel community. The gospel singer's death was confirmed by her ex-husband, Pastor Victor Kanyari

The gospel singer's known for her hit Eleventh Hour, died early on Monday morning while undergoing treatment in the hospital's high-dependency unit, according to reports from SSBCrack News, Nation, and The Star.

Her death was announced on social media by Pastor Kanyari:

“R.I.P Mama Sky. The mother to my kids.”

Bayo was honored by other gospel ministers, such as Bishop Muthee Kengei, who described her as a committed servant of God who "maximised her full potential" and "made an immeasurable contribution to the growth of gospel music in Kenya."

Her hit song, Eleventh Hour, is a popular hymn throughout all of East African gospel. As one of Kenya's most cherished gospel singers, Bayo has recorded other songs as well, which are titled Ngai Ti Mundu, Nikuhadwo, and Atasimama Nawe.

Betty Bayo's marriage to Pastor Victor Kanyari

Previously, Betty Bayo was married to Pastor Victor Kanyari, the founder of the Salvation Healing Ministry. Their marriage had become one of the most controversial and publicized in the Kenyan gospel scene. The couple back in 2014 was exposed for their national scandal in a televised investigation. Pastor Kanyari had allegedly asked congregants to use KSh 310 and use drugs like potassium permanganate to fake healing miracles.

This was a scandal that rocked their relationship to the core. Bayo was by his side through it all at the beginning, but a year later, they parted ways due to irreconcilable differences. She would later reveal during interviews that the aftermath weighed heavily on her career and faith.

Recently, in a Tuko.co.ke fan Q&A in September 2025, a fan named Shiru Josephine asked her questions about her previous marriage, and Betty Bayo joked around. When she was asked what attracted her to Kanyari, she replied, "teeth."

She was further asked about how they co-parent the kids now that they are no longer romantically involved. She again added humor to her response. She said:

“When the kids go to bond with their dad, I don’t go, they go with the nanny.”

Life after separation

She fell in love with and married Hiram Gitau, aka Tash. The two tied the knot in a private wedding in 2021 after two years of dating. They also keep a low profile on social media, probably posting once in a while about their travels or current family moments. The couple, who co-parents with Pastor Victor Kanyari, also maintain a presence in ministry.

Betty has claimed that she has now found the love she deserves after a fan had asked about her recent weight gain and glow. She said:

“Being loved the right way.”

Meanwhile, Kanyari, who is surrounded by rumors about his personal life, insisted that even though they separated back in 2015, Betty was still his "best friend". As he told Nairobi News in 2024:

“Their mother (Betty Bayo) is my friend, she calls me and we talk. She is my best friend and we talk. Let’s take care of the children even when we separate.”

He also acknowledged her current marriage by saying:

“Even the husband is good.”

Betty Bayo leaves behind her kids and her current husband, Tash, but her legacy as a gospel singer lives on.
