After Gwyneth Paltrow participated in a corporate advertisement following the widely publicized Coldplay kiss cam controversy, Kristin Cabot, the former head of HR at Astronomer, openly denounced Paltrow, accusing her of hypocrisy and escalating her online humiliation.

The controversy took place at Coldplay's concert in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on July 16, when Kristin Cabot, along with a group of friends and then-Astronomer CEO Andy Byron, attended the concert. During Chris Martin's jumbotron song, where the camera pans to the crowd, and he sings about them on the go.

When the camera cut to Cabot and Byron cuddling in the audience throughout the performance. When they realized they were on the big screen, they startled and separated quickly.

To which Chris Martin added fuel to the moment by saying:

"Either they're having an affair or they're just really shy. I'm not quite sure what to do."

With Chris Martin's commentary, it took no time for the video to reach over 100 million views on TikTok, as well as internet users identifying the couple and speculating their relationship.

Both Cabot and Byron were married at the time, but Cabot later explained that she was going through an amicable separation from her husband.

Gwyneth Paltrow's entry as the "temporary spokesperson"

As online attention heated up, Astronomer dropped a short promotional video featuring Gwyneth Paltrow, where she stated that she was a "temporary spokesperson" for the company. The ad leaned into sudden public interest sans any direct reference to either Cabot or Byron; Paltrow spoke calmly to viewers and shifted attention to the business of Astronomer. Paltrow donned a light blue shirt and spoke while sitting with her hands clasped, addressing the internet:

"Thank you for your interest in Astronomer. Hi, I'm Gwyneth Paltrow. I've been hired on a very temporary basis to speak on behalf of the 300-plus employees at Astronomer. Astronomer has gotten a lot of questions over the last few days, and they wanted me to answer the most common ones."

She continued:

"We will now be returning to what we do best: Delivering game-changing results for our customers. Thank you for your interest in Astronomer."

Many observers felt Paltrow's involvement was a bit tongue-in-cheek, as she was once married to Coldplay singer Chris Martin. But for Kristin Cabot, the ad was a line too far. In an interview with The Times, Cabot said the video "poured fuel on the raging fire," adding that she was deeply disappointed by Paltrow's participation:

"I was such a fan of her company, which seemed to be about uplifting women. And then she did this. I thought, 'How dare she after the beating she got for all the conscious uncoupling stuff.' What a hypocrite."

Cabot said that the ad infuriated her so much that she threw away all the products she had from Paltrow’s wellness brand.

Kristin Cabot's personal toll of public scrutiny and resignation from Astronomer

Andy Byron resigned as Astronomer's CEO after the controversy. And Kristin Cabot was asked to return to her role after the internal inquiry was completed. She opted to negotiate her resignation instead, and by July 24, the resignation was made public.

Reflecting on the 16-second bad decision, she stated that she had a ‘couple of High Noons’ before the incident, "and it's not nothing and I took accountability.'"

While speaking to The New York Times, Kristin Cabot spoke about the abuse she received after the controversy:

"I think as a woman, as women always do, I took the bulk of the abuse. People would say things like I was a 'gold-digger' or I 'slept my way to the top,' which just couldn't be further from reality. The amount I sacrificed to get where I did in my career, the amount of hands I've had to take off my ass over the years, comments I've had to swat away from men."

She added:

"I'm sure a lot of people will say, 'This is such a dead story, why bring it back up?' But it's not over for me, and it's not over for my kids. The harassment never ended."

While the world has moved on since the controversy at Coldplay's concert in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on July 16, Kristin Cabot claims that she is still dealing with the aftermath of the moment that went viral.

Gwyneth Paltrow and her representatives have not yet addressed Kristin Cabot's comments in public.
