Toy Story 5 will have a lot to do with technology, as director Andrew Stanton opens up about the film's premise and how the film will talk about how technology is becoming a factor in children's lives these days. However, the film won't revolve around making technology the villain. It will instead highlight the existential issues of kids' growing detachment towards toys.

In an interview with Empire, Stanton talked about what the film is about as he told the outlet,

“Honestly, it’s not even really about a battle so much as the realisation of an existential problem: that nobody’s really playing with toys anymore. Technology has changed everybody’s lives, but we’re asking what that means for us — and to our kids. We can’t just get away with making tech the villain.”

Stanton also talked about how the film will no longer revolve around Andy, who was one of the main characters in the first three films. Previously it was reported that the third would be the last one in the franchise, and later on the fourth film was made. The same happened with the fourth film but soon enough reports of s fifth film started brewing. What this means for the franchise is that it will keep evolving as the meaning of toys evolves around the world and we will most likely have more Toy Story films in the future. Talking about this, Stanton added,

“So 3 was the end... of the Andy years. Nobody’s being robbed of their trilogy. They can have that and never watch another if they don’t want to. But I’ve always loved how this world allows us to embrace time and change. There’s no promise that it stays in amber.”

Toy Story 5 is on the way, and Pixar is bringing the gang back for another round. The film is being produced by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures and is being written and directed by Andrew Stanton, marking the next major chapter in the Toy Story legacy. This installment brings back Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Tony Hale, Blake Clark, and John Ratzenberger, with Anna Faris, Ernie Hudson, Conan O’Brien, and Greta Lee stepping in as newcomers.

The road to Toy Story 5 has been layered. After Toy Story 4, Pixar said it would take a break from sequels and focus on original stories. Even so, no one has fully ruled out another Toy Story chapter. Producer Mark Nielsen emphasized that every Pixar film is treated like it could be the first or the last, while Annie Potts mentioned that fans would probably love to see what the toys do next.

Toy Story 5 will be in theaters on June 19, 2026.
