Apple Studios' new sports drama comedy is an adaptation of the German film Weekend Rebels. Yet to be titled, the film will star Mark Wahlberg, as well as The Conjuring fame Vera Farmiga, in lead roles. Stephen Chbosky is serving as the director.
The original film was an adaptation of Wir Wochenendrebellen, which is an autobiographical book by Jason von Juterczenka and Mirco von Juterczenka. The makers of the Hollywood remake have announced that Indie DesRoches has also joined the film's cast. Let us find out more about this news and about the overall film.
Indie DesRoches joins the cast of Weekend Rebels remake
Indie DesRoches has joined the cast of the forthcoming sports dramedy film based on Weekend Rebels, which also stars Vera Farmiga and Mark Wahlberg in the lead roles. While it's not confirmed yet, DesRoches will reportedly play the role of Wahlberg's son in the film.
Stephen Chbosky is the director of the film and has also written the screenplay. It is produced by Jeremy Kleiner, Dede Gardner, LeBron James, Spencer Beighley, and Jamal Henderson under their banners of Plan B and The SpringHill Company. Michelle Wilens, Max Wiedemann, Quirin Berg, and Maverick Carter are serving as the executive producers.
Apple Studios has developed and backed the Weekend Rebels adaptation in collaboration with Wiedemann & Berg Film. It focuses on Mirco, whose young son Jason has Asperger’s syndrome. The father promises his son, if he manages the school provocation, Mirco will take him to each and every football stadium in the country. Jason can then pick his favorite. The remake is expected to follow the same storyline.
Meanwhile, DesRoches, who was diagnosed with autism at the age of three, has acted in shows like Disney's Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Madison (Season 1), Father Stu, CSI: Vegas and I, Challenger, among others.
The original German film was written by Richard Kropf and starred Florian David Fitz, Aylin Tezel, Cecilio Andresen, Florina Siegel, Joachim Król, and Petra-Maria Cammin. The official synopsis as per Letterboxd reads:
Mirco von Juterczenka’s novel “Wir Wochenendrebellen” is the story of a father and his ten-year-old son, who is Asperger’s autistic. The boy has set his mind on finally finding his favourite football club. But his selection criteria are very specific and besides, he wants to experience all the clubs (no matter in which league they play) live in the stadium.
It was produced by Quirin Berg, Mara Fiedler, Justyna Müsch, and Max Wiedemann. Besides German, the film also had languages like Albanian, Latvian, and English. The film was released by Leonine Distribution on September 28, 2023.
