French Montana discusses his move to the US and family responsibilities

In April 2024, French Montana sat down with DJ Vlad for an interview. When asked what he remembered about his childhood in Morocco, the rapper said his father was selling gold at the time. However, he noted that his father was in jail when he was born, although he didn’t know the reason. He said his mother was a homemaker. His father saved enough to take his family to the US, where they could live the American Dream. He added:

“When we came from Morocco, my mother never spoke French. So, I just kept on speaking to her in Moroccan, which is like broken Arabic. It's like a Jamaican English.”

On the lines of language, he said:

“If I would speak to somebody from, you know, from Dubai or from Iraq or from people that really speak the real Arabic, they won't even understand what I'm saying. So it's like, yeah. So like it's broken Arabic. Moroccan speak.”

French Montana said that after moving to the US, his father decided to go back to their original country, leaving the rapper behind. However, his mother objected because she did not want to leave him. His father said it was her decision, but he would return anyway. The rapper remembered that when they came to the US, their visa was valid for six months, and after that, he said he stayed like an “alien.”

After his father left, he took charge of the family, looking after his mother and siblings. French Montana began hustling at the age of 16 to make ends meet.
