On the October 22 broadcast of Live with Kelly and Mark, Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos got into a debate about travel patterns. During the discussion, Ripa proposed a "airport divorce," a concept that has attracted the internet's curiosity.
During Wednesday's episode, Kelly Ripa suggested:
"Couples are doing something unique and I want to run this by you. I think we could do well with this: an airport divorce."
She added:
"[Because] you and I have different traveling philosophies, different traveling styles."
Mark Consuelos, who was surprised, had asked:
"What do you mean? Like, I walk fast in the airport?"
Consuelos responded that he prefers to arrive around 90 minutes prior to departure, while Ripa joked that he insists on arriving "four to sixteen hours" before a trip:
"You need to get there four to 16 hours before a flight takes off."
Consuelos replied:
"That's not true."
Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos’ on-air argument
The lighthearted disagreements continued between the couple. Ripa then mentioned that her husband gets "irritated" when fans approach him at the airport. To which he replied:
"Don’t put that out there. I’m very nice to people. That’s not cool."
Ripa replied:
"You are very nice to people, but you get irritated with me."
He then replied:
"No. I don’t get irritated with you. I’m irritated with you right now for trying to throw me under the bus."
Kelly Ripa then went on to recall a recent airport incident when Mark's TSA PreCheck stopped working temporarily, and she revealed that instead of using her expedited lane, she waited with him in the longer line. Ripa then revealed:
"The line was too slow and he got irritated with me!"
She continued:
"And I said, ‘No no no, this isn’t the part where you’re irritated with me because the line is too long. This is the part where you say, ‘Thank you honey, I’m sorry that I’m making you wait in this line.'"
Mark defended himself by claiming that Ripa's description of the incident was not totally accurate:
"You go through life, 30 years you know somebody. And then when they tell a story, it’s like, ‘Who are you?’ Because I was there, and she was there, and the perspective is so different."
Ripa fired back by asking:
"So you weren't irritated at all? You were happy as a clam? You were happy and this is not my problem at all?"
Kelly Ripa then added:
"My line was straight ahead, where the people sailed through because they still had their TSA privileges. But now I’m with Mark, so my shoes are coming off and everything’s being taken out of my bag. I am being violated in this line — and Mark is still irritated with me!"
She then concluded:
"The airport divorce is what we are definitely getting."
What is the ‘Airport Divorce’?
Kelly Ripa explained that it is a relationship hack where couples split up during the travel process so that they can move through the airport separately and then reunite on the flight or at the gate. Instead of bickering over check-in times or standing in long queques in security lines.
The bickering between the two continued
Their lighthearted disagreement didn't stop there. They found themselves diagreeing about another topic how to properly wash a car later on. Kelly Ripa remarked:
"I don’t have time — well first of all I never drive — but I think my life is too short to add car washing [by hand] to it. I feel like whoever got the car dirty, it’s their responsibility to wash the car. And if I’m a perpetual passenger, that’s not my problem."
Mark then added:
"Okay, so, how about inside the car? Let’s start with, let’s get some Windex and maybe you’ll wipe off the feet prints on the windshield because the first thing you do is you put your bare feet on the dash, and I’m staring at your toe prints when you’re not there. I see toe prints on the windshield. You can start there."
To which Ripa replied:
"I’ve got to stretch!"
Mark who has been married to Kelly Ripa for 29 years now and share three kids said:
"We’re having a day today. Just watching married people quarrel on TV. It’s fun! Mom and dad, fighting again!"
