Sha’Carri Richardson, one of the most well-known sprinters in the world, pulled out of the 100m semi-finals during the 2025 USA Track & Field Championships. She had previously run in the first round on July 31 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, with a season-best of 11.07 seconds. The run had been a return to form after sustaining an injury in February.

But a day after making that declaration, on August 1, Richardson withdrew from the 100m and the later 200m semi-finals. The withdrawal followed news reports that she was arrested the previous week in Seattle. The timing of this raised questions as to whether her legal problem had anything to do with why she pulled out of the competition.

In the evening, Richardson was back in the 200m event. The return followed increasing rumors regarding her arrest and whether it would affect her track life or World Championships selection for the Tokyo World Athletics Championships.

What happened at the Seattle airport on July 27?

As ESPN reported on August 2, 2025, Sha’Carri Richardson was arrested on July 27 at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The charge was fourth-degree domestic violence assault. Police reports cited by the paper say the incident occurred in the midst of an argument with her boyfriend, fellow sprinter Christian Coleman.

Airport security video revealed Sha’Carri Richardson shoving Coleman a few times and throwing headphones at him close to a TSA checkpoint. The argument allegedly turned loud and physical, and that is why it was interrupted by airport authorities.

Although Coleman declined to press charges, Richardson was arrested. She was subsequently released on bail. The case is still pending review by the local prosecutor’s office, according to police.

Did the arrest affect Sha’Carri Richardson's USA Track & Field Championships performance?

Sha’Carri Richardson had withdrawn from the 100m and 200m events at the U.S. Championships in the days leading up to the revelation of her arrest. USA Track & Field had no comment regarding whether or not her arrest was the reason for the withdrawal.

Sha’Carri Richardson subsequently shocked supporters by reinstating herself to the 200m race roster. Richardson later appeared on the revised race sheet dated August 1. She said nothing publicly regarding the arrest and the withdrawal and reinstatement.

Sha’Carri Richardson has faced adversity this season. During a post-race interview following the 100m prelims on July 31, she indicated that she had been recuperating from an injury she sustained in February. She continued that her objective was to demonstrate that she was in good health and prepare herself for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

Sha’Carri Richardson is still eligible to participate at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September. This is due to the fact that she has a break in the 100m as the 2023 defending world champion.

But her arrest and sparse racing this season create doubt about her preparedness and mental toughness. USA Track & Field has not publicly addressed her arrest or how it might affect team selections. The decision will ultimately be based on her fitness and performance in the coming weeks.

Sha’Carri Richardson hasn’t had any other public outing or social media activity since the incident. Her legal circumstances could also affect whether she will participate overseas or try to sort things out closer to home.
