Sophomore WNBA star Angel Reese has landed herself in some hot water after some comments she recently made about her Chicago Sky teammates. In an interview with the Chicago Tribune published on September 3, she was critical of her squad and their ability to win at the highest stage.
“I’m not settling for the same sh*t we did this year. We have to get good players. We have to get great players. That’s a non-negotiable for me. I’m willing and wanting to play with the best. And however I can help to get the best here, that’s what I’m going to do this offseason."
She went on to say,
“So it’s going to be very, very important this offseason to make sure we attract the best of the best because we can’t settle for what we have this year.”
Angel Reese also hinted at the possibility of leaving the Chicago Sky if she was not pleased with their efforts to get closer to their ultimate goal of winning a championship.
“I am very vocal about what we need and what I want… I’d like to be here for my career, but if things don’t pan out, obviously I might have to move in a different direction and do what’s best for me. But while I am here, I’m going to try to stay open-minded about what I have here and maximize that as much as I can.”
On September 5, the Chicago Sky responded via their official X account.
“The Chicago Sky values the safety, respect, and well-being of every player. We are committed to accountability so our players can stay focused on playing basketball.”
The statement continues,
“Because of statements detrimental to the team made by Angel Reese during league-mandated media, she will not play in the first half of the game on September 7 against the Las Vegas Aces. This matter has been handled and resolved internally, and we are moving forward as a team.”
Angel Reese tries to explain her comments
After the Chicago Sky’s comfortable win over the Connecticut Sun, on September 4 Angel Reese did her best to get ahead of the inevitable backlash. While speaking to reporters she backtracked on her initial comments and was more composed in her delivery.
“I probably am frustrated with myself right now. I think the language was taken out of context and I really didn’t intentionally mean to put down my teammates because they’ve been through this with me throughout the whole year."
Reese continued,
“I just have to be better with my language because I know it’s not the message it’s the messenger. And understanding what I say can be taken any type of way. So, I just have to be better and grow from this.”
Apart from her considerable abilities, Angel Reese is known for being the second rookie selected in last year's draft behind Caitlyn Clark. The two names have been inextricably linked, leading to a growing rivalry between two of the WNBA's most talented young stars.
