Bobby Shmurda talks about the environment he came from

In May 2025, Bobby Shmurda appeared on the Turning Pro podcast. Host Ben Scharf wanted to discuss the rapper’s childhood, but the latter said that it might make him emotional. Scharf said Shmurda came from an environment that was designed either to make one succeed or fail. The rapper commented:

“Well, I wouldn't say make you succeed. It's the environment that I was set up in is automatically to make you fail. It's either dead or in jail. And the people that do slip through the cracks, they are majority of them are I would say you know they spend they 30-40 years working 9 to 5, then don't know how to run a business or what running a business is like because they was never taught to run a business.”

Bobby Shmurda continued:

“The place where I come from you know it's like it's pissy hallways. It smell like piss bro what I'm saying it's like you got to walk past that sh*t every say you know it's f*cking crack sh*t outside. When you come out your house and sh*t like that. So like it's f*cking the streets is nasty all broken up.”

Bobby Shmurda on losing one’s pride and avoiding risky situations

Ben Scharf said he was curious about how Bobby Shmurda managed to get through tough times when many others did not. Bobby explained that he believed survival came from making sacrifices, like putting aside pride and avoiding things that felt fun at the time but could cause problems later. He added:

“So, you got to really evaluate your situation sometimes and say, ‘All these things seem cool, but what's the benefit? What's the beneficial I'mma get out of it in the next 5 10 years?’ Like, I go to the juveniles. I go to all these sh*t and I talk to these kids and I tell them about the gang banging and all the other selling dr*gs and stuff. It seems fun, but and then you can be making money um selling dr*gs, making money, thousands of dollars, millions of dollars into that one day you get locked up or that one day you get caught.”

However, Bobby Shmurda noted that these situations can be risky, and sometimes people may end up losing all they have.
