According to a recent article by Variety, Brian Cox criticized his Succession co-star, Jeremy Strong, and his style of method acting.
Before Cox mentioned in an interview in Town & Country in the year 2023 that Jeremy Strong's practice of method acting is 'f***ing annoying'.
Academy Award-winning actor Daniel Day-Lewis criticized Brian Cox for slamming the practice of method acting during a recent interview with the UK's Big Issue on November 08, 2025.
What did Daniel Day-Lewis say?
Daniel Day-Lewis, during an interview with UK's Big Issue, recently criticized Brian Cox for his comment on Jeremy Strong's method acting techniques. Actor Jeremy Strong plays the character of Cox's son in the hit television series Succession.
“Listen, I worked with Brian Cox once and got somehow drawn into this handbags-at-dawn conflict inadvertently.” Day-Lewis told the publication.
Daniel Day-Lewis further commented that Brian is a fine actor, and he never interfered with Day-Lewis's method acting at the time. Day-Lewis and Cox had worked together in the 1997 film Boxer.
“Brian is a very fine actor who’s done extraordinary work. As a result, he’s been given a soapbox… which he shows no sign of climbing down from. Any time he wants to talk about it, I’m easy to find."
If I thought during our work together I’d interfered with his working process, I’d be appalled. But I don’t think it was like that. So I don’t know where the f–k that came from.” Day-Lewis concluded.
Brian Fox has been candid about expressing his thoughts on method acting in previous interviews as well. Cox has said that he thinks that practices like method acting might vary for an actor.

During an episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers in 2021, Brian Cox expressed his thoughts on method acting. He also called out Daniel Day-Lewis for being a method actor and mentioned that he retired at the age of 55.
Daniel Day-Lewis is a three-time Oscar winner who is famous for implementing the practice of method acting while preparing for his roles. While preparing for his role in the movie My Left Foot in 1989, Day-Lewis decided to stay in his wheelchair the entire time while filming his character.
Brian Cox's comment on method acting
In 2021, Jeremy Strong made headlines when he told The New Yorker that he practiced method acting while preparing for the character of Kendall Roy.
During an episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers in 2021, Cox criticized Strong's practice of method acting and said it drains an actor, especially someone like Strong.
“He does get obsessed with the work. And I worry about what it does to him, because if you can’t separate yourself — because you’re dealing with all of this material every day. You can’t live in it. Eventually, you get worn out.” Cox said on the show.
In another interview with Town & Country in February 2023, Cox slammed Strong for method acting.
“He’s a very good actor,” he said about the “Deliver Me From Nowhere” star. “And the rest of the ensemble is all okay with this. But knowing a character and what the character does is only part of the skill set. It’s f–king annoying. Don’t get me going on it.” Brian Cox said in the interview.
Cox most recently starred in The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.
