Dove Cameron honored her deceased costar and dear friend Cameron Boyce in a touching tribute on May 28, 2025, to celebrate what would have been his 26th birthday.
The actress took to Instagram to share a series of black and white photos of herself with Boyce, also sharing a few behind-the-scenes images on the Disney Channel franchise to Instagram. The emotional tribute ended with an image of a special tattoo that Dove had gotten in his honor, which depicts a gun with a rose coming out of the barrel.
"I still feel you all the time. catch you in the next life. happy birthday. i love you" Dove Cameron wrote as the caption.
Cameron Boyce died in his sleep on July 7, 2019, at just 20 years of age. The family first stated that the cause was the result of a pre-existing medical condition.
A subsequent official autopsy conducted by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner determined that Boyce died from Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP), with his death being categorized as a natural death. His family said he suffered from epilepsy and had experienced seizures before.
Another Descendants co-star, Sofia Carson, also paid tribute to Cameron Boyce on his birthday, sharing a picture of him and writing:
"Keep dancing in heaven, my Cam. Earth could never be the same without you."
A look into Cameron Boyce’s early career and philanthropy
Born May 28, 1999, in Los Angeles, California, Cameron Boyce started early in the entertainment industry. He first appeared on screen in 2008 in Panic! at the Disco's music video That Green Gentleman before transitioning to films.
His big breakthrough in acting came when he appeared in the 2010 comedy Grown Ups with Adam Sandler as the character Keithie Feder.
Boyce achieved stardom in the Disney Channel series playing Luke Ross in Jessie from 2011 to 2015. He later played Carlos, the offspring of Cruella de Vil, in Disney’s Descendants trilogy.
Boyce took part in many philanthropy works. According to Disney Details Wiki, at a mere 18 years old, he raised more than $27,000 for Thirst Project, a nonprofit that works to provide clean water to those in need. The organization commemorated his work by renaming its Pioneering Spirit Award after him.
Cameron also dedicated himself to causes that focused on homelessness by joining hands with United Way’s HomeWalk and working with the Lucstrong Foundation, helping families impacted by sickle cell disease.
Commemorating his death, the Cameron Boyce Foundation was established. The organization is dedicated to finding a cure for epilepsy by funding research, education, and awareness campaigns.
