Renee Victor, widely recognized for her voice work as Abuelita in Pixar’s Coco, died at 86 following a battle with lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. She passed away on the evening of May 30 at her home in Sherman Oaks, California, surrounded by family, her talent agency confirmed to Deadline.

Her daughters, Raquel and Margo Victor, reflected on her legacy in a statement:

“Renee is perhaps best known as the voice of Abuelita in Disney’s 2017 blockbuster Coco. Renee was loved by so many & had fans all over the world. Her memory will be cherished by all who knew her.”

News of Renee Victor's passing away, sparked immediate tributes on social media platforms like X. Among her most celebrated works were her performances as the voices of female Argonians in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and female Khajiit in Oblivion Remastered, roles that endeared her to gamers who appreciated the unique personality and nuance she brought to these fantasy characters.

Netizens also recalled the emotional resonance of her performance in Coco.

"Rest in peace to a woman I've heard countless times. She was an ever present piece of each game that made it that much better," wrote Eredean.

From global tours to film roles: Renee Victor’s multi-faceted journey

Renee Victor carved out a unique space for herself in entertainment, according to The Sun. She was featured in films such as The Doctor with William Hurt and shared the screen with Robert Duvall in The Apostle and A Night in Old Mexico.

On the small screen, Victor took on a recurring role in Snowpiercer, appearing in 11 episodes, and voiced a character in an episode of the long-running animated series Futurama. She also stepped into the video game world, contributing her voice to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, released earlier this year.

Long before her screen presence grew, Victor had an international performance career with her husband. As 'Ray & Renee,' they toured from 1963 to 1973, and their popularity led fans to call them “the Latin Sonny & Cher.”

Renee Victor had also worked as a choreographer.
