Jon Jones' attorney is slamming Albuquerque Police for allegedly "targeting" the now-retired UFC champion.

According to several news outlets, attorney Christopher Dodd, who has worked with Jones in the past when he was accused of assaulting a drug testing agent, has spoken to TMZ about the improper charges his client now faces:

"It is truly unbelievable that the police would waste this amount of resources on such a case," the attorney told TMZ. "The only thing I can think of is that the police were targeting Jon for improper purposes. We will get to the bottom of it and make sure that this baseless case is dismissed."

Jon Jones, who left the sport just this weekend, was charged with a misdemeanor for allegedly absconding from the scene of a car collision in February. His arraignment has consequently been scheduled for July 24.

The allegations against Jon Jones explored

Reports say there was an inebriated woman involved with a lack of clothing "from the waist down," and the incident in question took place in Albuquerque, New Mexico. As per MMA Fighting, Jon Jones was allegedly driving the woman's vehicle at the time of writing, though he later fled on foot:

"As Jon’s lawyer, I am stunned by the Albuquerque Police Department’s decision to charge him in this new case,” Dodd said in the statement. “In the thousands of cases I have handled in my career, I have never seen a case as strange and unwarranted as this one. Jon was not driving that night; he wasn’t in the car."

Dodd continued:

"It appears that an intoxicated woman used a false allegation against Jon to avoid being arrested for DWI, and the police fell for it. Based on the criminal complaint, it looks like they went so far as to seek a warrant for Jon’s cell phone records while conducting a misdemeanor traffic investigation. I have never heard of such a thing."

Marca has reported that the woman informed officials that she was at Jon Jones' place before the accident, where she ingested alcohol and mushrooms. As per the outlet, he later confirmed that she was at his home, but not that he was present at the scene of the crime.

He claims she left of her own volition and later called him to inform him of the accident. MMA Fighting has reported that the woman, however, allegedly expressed hesitation to drink with Jon Jones, citing a previous incident where he forced her to drive home alone while drunk. She also accused Jones of promising her that it wouldn't happen this time.

She claims that a “restroom incident” occurred, forcing her to take off her pants. Jones was allegedly supposed to take her home for clean clothes, though the last thing she remembers was driving her vehicle alone. She purportedly has no recollection of the accident.

According to the Daily Mail, Jon Jones was later interrogated when he claimed that the woman handed her phone over to someone after she got into the collision, who "immediately opened the conversations with unprofessional language, which led him to doubt the legitimacy of the individual's claim."

The outlet further reports that the fighting champion rang the woman's cell phone 13 times, from around the accident to the next morning. Sport Bible has reported that bodycam footage from the night in question has since been released, which shows a police officer arguing with Jon Jones over the phone. Officials have since claimed that he also threatened a police safety aide.

Just a day earlier, in a bombshell conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, Dana White, the chief of UFC, announced Jon Jones' retirement. Per the Daily Mail, the 37-year-old is considered one of the heavyweights in the industry. White has since addressed the incident in a statement to The Mac Life, where she said:

"I saw it today, and when I saw it, I know everybody is going to think this is why he retired, and maybe that is why he retired, who the hell knows, these are all questions you gotta ask him."
