Actor and comedian Russell Brand was charged with s*xual assault and r*pe in April 2025. He was scheduled to appear in court on May 2, 2025, where he was given conditional bail. Brand was charged based on the timeline of incidents between 1999 and 2005. The allegations were levelled by four different women.

According to CNN, one woman said she was r*ped in Bournemouth in 1999. Another reported being indecently assaulted in Westminster in 2001. A third woman claimed she was orally r*ped and s*xually assaulted in the same area in 2004.

The fourth woman said she was s*xually assaulted in Westminster sometime between 2004 and 2005. Russell Brand’s appearance in court included confirming his name and personal details and the reading of the conditions of bail.

In a press release from April 2025, Jaswant Narwal from the Crown Prosecution Service said:

“We carefully reviewed the evidence after a police investigation into allegations made following the broadcast of a Channel 4 documentary in September 2023. We have concluded that Russell Brand should be charged with offences including r*pe, s*xual assault and indecent assault.”

The allegations against the actor came about in 2023, and the investigation began the same year. He had denied the accusations throughout. On April 4, he shared a self-recorded video on Instagram, explaining his stance on the matter. He said:

“I was a drug addict, a s*x addict, and an imbecile but what I never was a r*pist. I have never engaged in non-consensual activity. I pray that you can see that by looking in my eyes. I want to thank all of you for your continuing support.”

Russell Brand will appear in the Old Bailey on May 30

According to new court documents, he was reportedly accused of pulling one woman toward a men's restroom in 2001 and touching another woman’s private parts without permission in 2004. His next court hearing is scheduled for May 30, 2025, at the Central Criminal Court, or Old Bailey.

During a recent stream on Rumble, Russell Brand questioned why there hadn’t been an investigation into r*pe gangs, comparing it to how pharmaceutical companies conduct clinical trials to prove their products are safe and don’t cause harm.

He argued that, similarly, members of the Labour Party should want a proper enquiry into r*pe gangs. Brand added:

“The same way me. I want a trial because I know that I am innocent. I am not a broken sinner and a wretched hopeless individual but I know I am innocent. So, an examination, a thorough and intrepid examination will establish that the innocence in the eyes of everybody. I welcome it. What a relief it will be. I am going to my country right now so why wouldn’t they want an inquiry in a r*pe gang?”

NBC News reported that a conditional bail is different from that in the US, as one does not need to pay a bond to get released. However, Russell Brand is required to inform the court about his travel plans and update his residential address in case he changes places. There are various circumstances based on which sentencing would be decided if convicted.
