Former NHL player Ryan Kesler has pleaded not guilty to the charges of sexual assault against a minor.

USA Today has reported that Kesler, who was arrested and charged with two misdemeanor counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct linked to the alleged inappropriate behavior with a 16-year-old child, made an appearance in court this week. He maintained his innocence in the face of the alleged incident, which purportedly dates back to earlier this year.

The Metro Detroit native and former National Hockey League star, 41, was arraigned on Monday. The Detroit News has reported that fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct can carry a maximum penalty of up to two years in prison and a fine of $500 for each count.

Everything we know about Ryan Kesler's alleged crimes as his lawyer maintains his innocence:

The Detroit News has reported that Ryan Kesler's offenses allegedly took place on January 1, and the charges were brought forth against him by the Orchard Lake Police Department. Judge Kimberly Small set his bond to $5,000, which he has since reportedly posted.

He is prohibited from leaving the state without prior permission from the court, and must also make an appearance at all scheduled hearings. A probable-cause conference has been scheduled for November 6, with a preliminary examination to follow suit on November 13.

“Ryan emphatically denies the allegations and is completely innocent of the charges. The allegations are false, and he is prepared to fight them vigorously in court," Kesler's attorney Robert Morad said in a Tuesday email statement. "Just like all citizens accused of a crime, he is presumed to be innocent. We are confident that when all of the facts and circumstances are presented that he will be fully exonerated.”

Ryan Kesler is most known for having played for the Vancouver Canucks from 2003 to 2014. He was then traded to the Anaheim Ducks, where he played until he retired in 2019.

TSN has reported that he was also a member of the United States Olympic teams in 2010 and 2014, and won the 2011 Frank J. Selke Trophy as the NHL’s top defensive forward. That same year, he was in the running to nab the Stanley Cup final for Vancouver. Also a two-time all-star, he reportedly played 1,001 regular-season games in total, during which time he amassed 258 goals and 573 points.

The Toronto Sun has reported that, in recent years, Ryan Kesler has been coaching a 15U bantam midget team via the Little Caesars AAA Hockey Club. As of this writing, program director Brian Rolston, who also previously worked for the NHL, has not acknowledged the case.
