Comedian Shane Gillis fired shots at Caitlin Clark, Aaron Rodgers, Donald Trump, and more at the ESPY Awards opening monologue on July 16. His roast of Caitlin Clark was met with mixed reactions as he compared himself with the Indiana Fever star.
"It's been a big year for the WNBA, I love Caitlin Clark. She and I have a lot in common. We're both whites from the Midwest who have nailed a bunch of threes."
After getting a mixed reaction from the crowd at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, Gillis continued:
"There you go, lighten up a little. It's not serious. We'll see about this one."
He then brought in his second joke on the basketball player and said:
"When Caitlin Clark retires from the WNBA, she's going to work at a Waffle House so she can continue doing what she loves most: fist-fighting Black women."
Gillis' remarks were in reference to some heated exchanges Clark had with the opponents this season.
Clark was not present at the awards show, as the Indiana Fever were on the road for a game against the New York Liberty at the Barclays Center.
Who else did Shane Gillis roast at the ESPY awards?
Other than Caitlin Clark, Aaron Rodgers, Bill Belichick, Donald Trump, and a few other notable names, fell victim to Shane Gillis' opening monologue at the ESPY awards.
Gillis poked fun at Rodgers' tenure with the Jets and Rodgers' reluctance to get vaccinated during the COVID-19 pandemic:
"Aaron Rodgers did not take the vaccine because he predicted that it would be bad for him and then he joined the New York Jets. So maybe he wasn't right about everything."
While firing shots at Joe Rogan, Gillis said:
"Joe Rogan actually wanted me to be here to host this award show so that I could capture Adam Silver because Joe thinks he's an alien. And Donald Trump wanted me to be here to capture Juan Soto for the same reason."
The audience had divided reactions to the joke, and one person from the upper level of the theatre booed the joke. After making a bookie joke about Shohei Ohtani, Shane Gillis roasted University of North Carolina football coach Bill Belichick's relationship with his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson:
"A bookie is what Bill Belichick reads to his girlfriend before bedtime."
Shane Gillis' joke was in reference to Belichick's and his girlfriend's 48-year age difference. While Belichick is 72, his girlfriend is 24 years old.
