More about Conan Gray's personal life, as singer releases new album
Conan Gray was born in California on December 5, 1998, but his family later moved to Japan to help care for his maternal grandfather, who was ill at the time. In a 2018 interview with Sidewalk Talks, the Idle Town singer talked about how his parents had met at a party, saying:
"My mom met my dad at some party somewhere, and they were both super young and they then got married. Then they had us, got divorced and then got married a billion other times, yeah..they had a funny little love story."
According to Capital FM, the family lived in Japan until Conan Gray was a little over three years old, when they decided to return to the US. In an interview with Sidewalk Talks, Conan Gray explained the reason why his family moved around so much, adding that they lived in various places before finally settling in Texas. He said:
"Yeah, my dad was in the military. We definitely moved around a lot. We lived in Japan for a couple of years, and um yeah I have moved around a billion times, I think. Throughout the course of my life, I was just, gone and always just moving homes, until I moved to Texas in the sixth grade. And I stayed there for the entire of my middle school and high school."
In the interview, he also mentioned that his mother worked in the food and safety department, whereas his father worked different jobs, including working as an arm wrestler.
In an interview with Notion Online, Conan Gray opened up about how the tough circumstances in his early life forced him to grow up quickly. He said:
"I continually had to learn the way the world really is. I grew up very, very, very quickly. When I think back at who I was when I was seven, I very much feel like seven-year-old me was like 45 years old — really taking care of myself, I had to be super independent…"
He added:
"Throughout your life you have all these things that mould you into who you are. My past definitely wasn’t very good, I had a pretty rough childhood but it also fully made me who I am. It’s hard because I wouldn’t wish my childhood on any body but also I don’t think I’d have it any other way myself for me.”
Conan Gray previously spoke about his experiences as being one of the few Asian people in his school, adding that he always planned to leave Texas, something that is reflected in his song, Idletown. In his interview with Uproxx, he said:
"My life mission growing up was just to get out of Texas. I just need to get out. I need to be safe. I need to go to college and get a good job."
In his recent interview with i-D, Conan Gray revealed more about his fourth studio album, Wishbone, saying:
"I know! It’s quite intense. I make my best music when I’m a little uncomfortable with how much I’m revealing. This was my secret project for two years, and now talking about it openly feels like betraying myself. I’m literally having to face the music."
Wishbone features twelve tracks and includes a collaboration between Conan and Grammy-nominated producer Dan Nigro, with whom he had worked on his previous three albums.
