Jack Quaid and his father, Dennis Quaid, did not see eye to eye regarding the recent controversy involving Jimmy Kimmel. Before the upcoming return of Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday, September 23, Jack publicly supported the late-night host. On Friday, September 19, the Boys actor posted a message on Instagram praising Kimmel and his staff.

“Sending my support to @jimmykimmellive, I’ve had the pleasure of appearing on the show 3 times and each time I was overwhelmed by the generosity and warmth not only from him, but his entire staff. Freedom of speech is fundamental to our democracy and we must do all we can to protect it. #freedomofspeech #jimmykimmel,” wrote Jack.

Just days later, Dennis took a very different stance while speaking to Piers Morgan on Piers Morgan Uncensored. The veteran actor acknowledged that Jimmy Kimmel “was always a very kind guy,” but added that his recent comments about the killing of Charlie Kirk could warrant accountability.

“You have the right to free speech, and he certainly had the right to do that, I would definitely give him that. But there are consequences that come with it, and you have to accept those if you’re going to speak freely like that,” explained Dennis.

Dennis further argued that Kimmel misrepresented Tyler Robinson, the man accused of killing Kirk at Utah Valley University on September 10.

“Jimmy goes on and he lies, basically, or tries to put it out that this guy is right wing,” he explained.

According to Us Weekly, Jimmy Kimmel addressed the ongoing investigation into Charlie Kirk’s killing during the September 15 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!.

“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them with everything they can to score political points from, in between the finger pointing, there was grieving,” shared Kimmel.

Kimmel also criticized President Donald Trump, questioning the genuineness of his grief. After showing a clip where Trump talked about White House ballroom renovations instead of Kirk, Kimmel added,

“This is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he called a friend. This is how a four-year-old mourns a goldfish.”

Jimmy Kimmel returned to late-night TV on Tuesday, September 23, just six days after ABC temporarily suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! The episode started with a humorous montage of news clips calling his first monologue back one of the “most pivotal moments” in broadcast history. Moments later, cameras cut to Kimmel and Guillermo Rodriguez in costume - Kimmel dressed as a mouse, and his sidekick in a banana suit.

When the host finally took the stage, the studio audience greeted him with a standing ovation and chants of “Jimmy! Jimmy!” “If you’re just joining us, we’re pre-empting your regularly scheduled programming of Celebrity Family Feud to bring you this special report,” Kimmel joked, poking fun at what filled the slot during his absence.

He went on to say,

“I’m happy to be here tonight with you. I’m not sure who had a weirder 48 hours: me or the CEO of Tylenol. It’s been overwhelming. I’ve heard from a lot of people over the last six days. I’ve heard from all the people in the last six days. Everyone I have ever known has reached out 10 or 11 times. Characters from my past, the guy who fired me from my first radio job in Seattle — where we are not airing tonight by the way — his name is Larry.”

After revisiting the 1989 story about being fired by Larry, Kimmel shifted to thanking fellow late-night figures, mentioning Seth Meyers, Stephen Colbert, and “even” Jay Leno.

During his broadcast, Kimmel noted that support for him had come from unexpected places. He said even a late-night host in Germany reached out.

“Can you imagine? This country has become so authoritarian the Germans are like, ‘Come here!’” he joked.

Kimmel then turned his attention to fans of the show, many of whom expressed their support by canceling their Disney+ subscriptions.

“You supported our show, cared enough to do something about it to make your voices heard so that mine could be heard and I will never forget it,” he said.

The comedian went on to thank political figures he admitted he did not expect to support him. “It takes courage to speak out against this administration, and they did, and they deserve credit for it and thanks,” Kimmel said of Ben Shapiro and Candace Owens.

“For telling their followers that our government cannot be control what we do and do not say and TV,” he added.

Kimmel’s return combined humor, gratitude, and pointed commentary- a blend that has defined his long-running presence on late-night television.
