Actress Diane Keaton, best known for her role in "The Godfather" is reported to have passed away on Saturday, October 11. According to People Magazine, the incident has shocked her fans and former colleagues, including director Woody Allen and actress Mia Farrow, who expressed their condolences in light of her passing.

Diane Keaton had previously defended Woody Allen through the years despite him being accused of allegegedly inappropriately touching his then seven-year-old adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow, back in 1992. Although he was never found guilty, the accusations resurfaced in 2014, when the now-grown Dylan addressed the issue in an open letter in New York Times. In a 2014 interview with The Guardian, Diane Keaton commented on the situation, in support of the Oscar-winning director, saying:

"I have nothing to say about that. Except: I believe my friend."

While adding that she never had been close to Mia Farrow, she said:

"I was never friends with Mia – I was friendly. Sort of like I'm friendly with you. I like you, I like the way you are. I like the way she is, too."

Diane Keaton, who was seventy-nine years at the time of her passing, is survived by her two children, her daughter whom she adopted in 1996, and her son, whom she adopted in 2001. She maintained a long-standing friendship with Woody Allen, whom she dated during the 1960s and 1970s. The former couple had also collaborated on many projects together throughout the years. According to People Magazine, following her death on Saturday, a source close to Woody Allen commented that he was distraught over the news, saying:

"He is extremely distraught and surprised and upset. It makes him think of his own mortality."

Meanwhile, Mia Farrow also expressed her condolences on Instagram, writing:

"She was an absolutely wonderful actress - and a rare and fascinating person. Thoughts with her children and sisters. Rest in peace Diane."

Back in 1993, Mia Farrow and Woody Allen were in middle of a highly publicized separation and custody battle when Farrow revealed that their adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow, had previously accused the director of allgeged improper conduct, claiming that he had "acted inappropriately toward Dylan."

The former couple had been together since the 1980s and separated after it was revealed that Farrow's other daughter, Soon-Yi Previn, whom she had adopted with her previous partner, composer André Previn, was in a relationship with Woody Allen. At that time, an investigation was conducted regarding his conduct towards Dylan, but he was not found guilty, although he was denied custody of his children.

Woody Allen later married Soon-Yi Previn in 1997, when he was sixty-two and she was twenty-seven. Previn, who now shares two children with the "A Rainy Day in New York" director, continues to have a complicated relationship with her mother, Mia Farrow, even today.

Dylan Farrow spoke publicly about the incident again in 2013, during an interview with Vanity Fair. Soon after this Woody Allen publicly denied the accusations against him. During the height of the #MeToo Movement in 2018, Diane Keaton publicly voiced her support for Woody Allen on X (formerly Twitter), writing:

“Woody Allen is my friend and I continue to believe him.It might be of interest to take a look at the 60 Minutes interview from 1992 and see what you think.”

According to Entertainment Online, Diane Keaton had previously opened about her struggles with bulimia. She had also revealed her long battle with cancer, but the exact cause of her death has not yet been made public by her family who have requested for privacy.
