Dr. Phil McGraw has expressed his support for actress Sydney Sweeney amid her American Eagle advertisement controversy.
On August 08, the famous therapist appeared in an episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, where he offered his opinion on American Eagle's latest jeans advertisement featuring Sweeney. The advertisement has drawn criticism for allegedly nodding to eugenics.
“Six million people were killed, six million Jews were massacred and murdered, and they equate that to a blue jeans ad for a Hollywood actress? What an insult. That is ridiculous.” McGraw said on the show, as per a clip shared by Fox News.
McGraw continued voicing his support for Sydney Sweeney by saying he will buy these jeans for everyone in the family.
“I’m going to go out and buy those jeans for every woman in my family, everybody I know, just to show support.” McGraw said.
Bill Maher, the host of the show, also shared his two cents on people hating Sweeney for doing this ad and expressed his support for the brand as well.
“I don’t think they [American Eagle] did it on purpose, but I also think it’s pretty funny that all the online social justice girls are like, ‘It’s racist. There’s no such thing as good genes, right?’ And then you go on Tinder and swipe left on every bald guy.” Maher said on the August 8 episode of his show.
Earlier, Us Weekly had reported that an exclusive source close to Sweeney had shared that,
“Sydney thinks this whole thing has been blown out of proportion.”
About the Sydney Sweeney controversy
On July 23, popular American jeans brand 'American Eagle' released a set of videos to promote their new collection. The campaign featured actress Sydney Sweeney. The tagline of the campaign was 'Sydney Sweeney has great jeans'.
With its release, the campaign sparked controversy with critics accusing the campaign of promoting eugenics. Here is one of the ads from the campaign for your reference:
The campaign was also linked to the contentious 1980 Calvin Klein denim advertisement featuring 15-year-old Brooke Shields, which was criticized for its provocative theme.
On August 1, American Eagle released a statement addressing the criticism and outlining the campaign's goals:
"The focus of 'Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans' has always been the jeans. Her pants. Her tale. We'll keep celebrating how each person confidently dons their AE jeans in their unique style. Everyone looks good in great jeans."
While Sweeney has not addressed the controversy, she recently made a public appearance during the screening of the movie Americana on August 3 in Los Angeles.
