Actress Gabrielle Union, known for her roles in Bring It On and The Perfect Find, among others, is looking back on her first big paycheck. On June 12, 2025, she attended a panel discussion at the American Black Film Festival, held in Miami.

She shared that she used to travel via Mazda and wanted to get one for herself. Her father, however, advised her not to get a brand-new car because its value would drop once she drove it. Union said:

“I walked into Mazda and I bought myself a black on black Mazda Miata with leather seats. Lemme tell you about leather seats in Los Angeles. Do you know I scorched myself every time I got out? Yeah, that was my first purchase. And it depreciated the second I drove it off the lot!”

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Gabrielle Union holds a net value of $40 million. She and her husband, Dwyane Wade, bought a mansion worth $20 million in California in 2020. They also hold other real estate assets, including an estate in Sherman Oaks valued at $6 million.

The couple also signed prenuptial agreements before tying the knot. Speaking about protecting their assets, Dwyane Wade once said in the Club Shay Shay podcast:

“I told her the same way, ‘I’ll sign a prenup too. You’re a millionaire, you got money. You work hard for yourself.’”

He also mentioned:

“My wife is a working actress who spends time away from the family to go work, build. There are some things I pick up versus some things she picks up but she does some, I do some”

Gabrielle Union once said her financial responsibilities made her tense

In 2023, Gabrielle Union sat down for an interview with IDEA GENERATION, where she discussed working with top brands and work ethics. When asked when she first felt secure in her career and confident that steady work would continue, Gabrielle Union admitted that she still dealt with those worries.

She explained that having more financial responsibilities made her anxious, especially if a movie didn’t perform well. She often questioned whether she would have enough to support everyone who depended on her.

Although people around her reassured her that more work would come, she learned to stay calm and focus on the process rather than letting fear and a mindset of scarcity drive her. Gabrielle Union also said:

“It's weird to say I'm head of household because in this household, we split everything 50-50. But in the other households that each of us have to support it puts this there's always this like gorilla on your back that it is like, you better work boots, you better work you know you're gonna sleep in, you know somebody might not eat come on and it's hard. It's hard to let that go so I'm working on that.”

Gabrielle Union said she first started to see herself as a brand when she landed a major endorsement deal with Neutrogena, which kept renewing her contract each year.

In the beginning, she admitted to faking confidence and copying what others said about branding. Back then, her choices didn’t always align with her values. However, in recent years, she became much more intentional and strategic about how she built her brand.
