Halle Berry had her say this week after ex-husband David Justice revisited their marriage with some sharp criticism. David Justice, a former Major League Baseball player, claimed the actress “didn’t cook or clean” when they were married in the ’90s. Berry’s response came via Instagram. The post, filled with snapshots from a sunlit vacation, carried the caption, “Phew…! cooking, cleaning and mothering.”
As E! News noted, the images included Berry in a bikini with a glass of wine, smiling alongside her partner, Van Hunt. One photo captured a more intimate scene, Berry with her arms around a girl thought to be her daughter, Nahla, suggesting that even on holiday, she was still very much in mom mode.
David Justice shared lack of ‘Motherly’ qualities led to issues in his marriage to Halle Berry:

David Justice opened up about his marriage to Halle Berry during a candid conversation on All the Smoke with Matt Barnes, revisiting the years that led to their 1997 split. The former MLB player, shared that when he and Halle Berry, married in 1993, they enjoyed a “honeymoon state” for about five months. But as he began thinking about starting a family, differences between them became more apparent.
"My knowledge and my understanding, my wisdom around relationships just wasn't vast, so, I'm looking at my mom — and I'm a Midwest guy. So, in my mind, I'm thinking a wife at that time should cook, clean, [be] traditional, you know?" Justice admitted.
He remembered questioning whether Berry fit that vision of family life.
"If we have kids, is this the woman I want to have kids with and build a family with?" he explained.
"At that time, as a young guy — she don't cook, don't clean, don't really seem like motherly, and then we start having issues." added David.
Justice said public scrutiny was limited until he decided to end the marriage in 1996. He also revealed that Halle Berry had been the one to propose, just months after they met in May 1992.
"I said OK, because I couldn't say no. Who's going to say no at that time?" he said.
"I don't know if my heart was really into it, but I didn't want to make her feel bad and say no, you know, or [if] I was just in the moment." he added.
As reported by People, Justice went on to explain that their work schedules made things harder.
"We spent a lot of time apart because she was doing movies in this country, that country, and we honestly probably could have made it if I knew about therapy. If we knew about therapy, we probably could have made it." he explained.
Looking back, he stressed that their split wasn’t due to any major conflict.
"We never had any major issues like that, it's just... because I was young and had only been in one real relationship before her." he shared.
Halle Berry was married to Olivier Martinez before their separation in 2015. Before her relationship with Martinez, she had been married to David Justice and later to singer and actor Eric Benét. She is the mother of two children: daughter Nahla, with ex Gabriel Aubry, and son Maceo-Robert, with Martinez.
