The ex-LSU BFFs, Flau’jae Johnson and Angel Reese, are not as close as they once were, the latter admitted last September. The Chicago Sky star didn’t share much on her podcast but asserted that she still supported her teammate from the Tigers.
Months after Reese’s comments, Johnson has shared her side. The college basketball player sat with The Breakfast Club’s Loren Lorosa ahead of the 25th BET Awards, talking about her rapping career, career ambitions, online trolling, and more. The host also asked Flau’jae Johnson about Angel Reese’s remarks on their dynamic, to which the LSU star replied,
“We're not friends, but I mean, like, that bond and that we had and that thing that we did together win a national championship you can never take that away from us.”
Johnson explained why she is not friends with Reese anymore,
“Sometimes, like, stuff happens. You wish it don't happen, but it do and you just got to grow. But I mean, like, I support her in everything. [...] She killing in the WNBA. I'll be on social media, you know what I'm saying, clowning the folks that be trying to talk about down on her.”
Flau’jae claimed that she is proud of Angel Reese but reiterated that “stuff happens.” Lorosa asked Johnson about what happened between her and her ex-LSU teammate. She revealed that the “media” and the stuff that happened in the “locker room” and “behind the scenes” were the reasons. In her own words, Flau’jae Johnson said,
“It was a lot of media. It was a lot of locker room stuff, like, you know what I'm saying, stuff that go on behind the scenes but you know it happens.”
Before ending the interview, Loren hoped that the former LSU Tigers players would have a conversation.
Angel Reese addressed her dynamic with Flau’jae Johnson on her podcast last year
The former teammates on the LSU Tigers women’s basketball team were seemingly close in the past. Flau’jae and Angel played together for two seasons and were a part of the 2023 NCAA championship-winning team. Besides their performance on the court, Johnson and Reese also made joint appearances on multiple podcasts, including The Breakfast Club.
In 2024, the Chicago Sky player made her WNBA debut while her teammate continued to be part of the LSU Tigers. In September last year, Reese launched her podcast Unapologetically Angel and dropped a significant revelation in the first episode. When asked to comment on her dynamic with Flau’jae, the basketball pro told her co-host Maya Reese,
“I still support Flau’jae. We aren't as close as we used to be, and there's no feelings or anything, but we aren't as close as we used to be, that's why people always expect us to, like, still be posting each other and stuff like that but like we aren't as close.”
She added,
“It happens um I mean you don't have the best relationships for everybody and don't always continue relationships with people so I wish her the best always. I'm always going to support her. I'm going back to LSU soon just to be able to see them and support the girls.”
Angel Reese concluded,
“There's no love lost, but we aren't as close as we used to be.”
Coincidentally, Angel Reese and Flau’jae were nominated at the 2025 BET Awards in the same category, “Sportswoman of the Year.” A’ja Wilson, Claressa Shields, Coco Gauff, Dawn Staley, Juju Watkins, Sha’Carri Richardson, and Simone Biles were among the other nominees, but the Chicago Sky player was named as the winner.
