As per a recent article by the New York Post, the late Steve Irwin's daughter Bindi Irwin was unable to attend the annual Steve Irwin Gala due to an unexpected health adversity.
The news was reported by her brother Robert to People — the 26-year-old was hospitalized as she had to undergo surgery for a ruptured appendix. Bindi had revealed two years ago that she had been suffering from endometriosis for the last 10 years.
The Steve Irwin Gala is an annual event organized to honor the legacy, life, and stories of Steve Irwin — a popular Australian wildlife expert who was known as the 'Crocodile Hunter'. The gala is held with the aim of raising funds to contribute to the late environmental conservationist's mission of wildlife conservation. Steve died in 2006 due to a stingray attack.
“She's going to be OK, but surgery - out of all the things we were ready for, that was not one of them. She’s just come out the other side of endometriosis and now the appendix goes. Health is so important – it really is.” Robert Irwin told People
Robert also mentioned that while Bindi was determined to attend the gala, her surgeon advised her against it since the appendix had ruptured and she needed surgery.
“She’s very sad. She’s devastated that she and Mom can’t be here, but I know she’ll make a speedy recovery.” Robert added.
“She came to Las Vegas and was ready to come to the gala, put on a brave face in a lot of discomfort and a lot of pain and said, ‘Nope, I’m just going to tough it out, I’m going to go for it. But the surgeon said, ‘No, your appendix is going. That thing’s gotta come out.’ Health has to come first.” Robert told New York Post.
Irwin further elaborated that his mother Terri was also unable to attend the gala and will be helping Bindi with her recovery. He explained that Bindi has been an advocate for women's health.
“Bindi has become an incredible advocate for women's health, particularly, and I think it’s really important to prioritise getting help.”
A day before, Bindi posted pictures of herself with her mom and brother in Las Vegas on Instagram.
“Khaki by day - Bellagio chic by night! Here in Las Vegas for the Steve Irwin Gala raising funds and awareness for Wildlife Warriors. Supporting conservation and remembering Dad’s extraordinary legacy. Enormous gratitude to everyone for your support as we continue to do all that we can to protect wildlife and wild places for the future generations.” Bindi wrote as caption.
In a podcast, A Life of Greatness, on February 3, Bindi shared more about her health struggles and how her condition remained unidentified for years because the doctors didn’t know much about it.
“I went for 10 years undiagnosed because doctors really didn’t know enough, they diagnosed me with a million other things, like IBS, or hormones or ‘It’s just part of being a woman. The symptoms continued to snowball and it took me such a long time to find help.”
“It resulted in a lot of canceled plans, people must have thought I was just incredibly flaky because I was getting so sick from this disease that I would try to get up and I would just throw up, I was in so much pain all the time. Every day the fatigue and the battle.” Bindi mentioned in the podcast.
