Brooke Hyland opened up about her mother’s latest health challenge in a heartfelt TikTok video posted on June 24. The 27-year-old, best known for her role on Dance Moms, revealed that her mother, Kelly Hyland, is preparing to undergo open-heart surgery. Kelly had recently completed breast cancer treatment in August of last year.

Brooke Hyland explained the situation while doing her makeup during the video.

“You guys all watched her … finish up her chemo and all of her breast cancer-related things. Unfortunately, right after that, she got news that she needs to get open heart surgery, she has a TikTok but she doesn’t like to post, so I figured I would update you guys so you know what’s going on and you can send all of your prayers her way.”

Brooke Hyland also gave insight into the timeline of the upcoming procedure. Stating that her mom was originally scheduled to undergo it on Friday instead of today. She stated,

“They are hoping to go in robotically but if they aren’t able to reach her heart then they will have to go in the traditional way … terrifying. Her heart is currently leaking.”

Brooke Hyland explained that her mom had seen multiple physicians leading up to the surgery, each with a slightly different explanation for what caused the heart valve issue. Brooke Hyland said,

“She’s had a few different opinions from doctors, some say that she’s had it since she was younger and her valve just doesn’t close properly [while] others have said that it might be a side effect of the cancer because it could be a tear. I don’t really know. She’s getting it fixed.”

She mentioned how some scans that her mother got for cancer helped them find out about this issue. She closed the video with a gentle but urgent plea asking for thoughts and prayers as her mother undergoes the procedure.

Kelly Hyland’s leaking heart, isn't her first health battle. Last summer, in August 2024, she celebrated a hard-won milestone by ringing the bell at the end of her initial cancer treatment. She marked the moment in an Instagram post dated August 20, writing:

“Next steps surgery, 20 radiation and 11 more treatments. I GOT THIS.”

According to Entertainment Now, Kelly had first gone public with her diagnosis back in May 2024. Doctors had diagnosed her with stage 1, grade 3 invasive carcinoma. What followed was a grueling period filled with chemotherapy, surgery, radiation, and an unshakable show of strength.

In April, she reached another major turning point, this time at the end of a long round of treatment. Her daughter, Brooke Hyland, captured the moment on video, and the clip quickly made the rounds online. Kelly stood with a balloon in hand, bearing the words “Peace Out Cancer,” smiling with pride. She rang the bell three times, one for each of her children.

Kelly Hyland had shared with E! News that the earliest warning signs of her breast cancer diagnosis didn’t come from pain or discomfort but from compliments. She explained,

"The first red flag was my significant weight loss, I lost enough that others noticed and would ask for my dieting hacks, but there was nothing I had changed in my day-to-day to cause the loss."

It was enough to keep her on high alert. Later, she found a lump in her breast. Kelly explained that she booked the mammogram herself, underscoring how crucial it is for women to stay proactive. She added,

"I had just had one done eight months prior and the results came back clean. However, this new mammogram and sonogram did not, it came back showing a mass."

That mass turned out to be malignant. After a biopsy confirmed the diagnosis, further scans revealed the full picture: invasive carcinoma, stage 1, grade 3—an especially fast-developing form of cancer. She stated,

"I went from clean results to a malignant mass in eight months, I was shocked that it had grown that quickly and scared of the battle I knew I was about to face."
