Australian actress Clare McCann recently shared the heart-wrenching news of her son Atreyu’s passing. The Blog Party star posted her child’s picture on Instagram and wrote,
“It’s with shattered hearts that we share the passing of my beautiful son, Atreyu McCann. He was the brightest light in my world — kind, creative, and endlessly loved.”
Clare, who is the founder of Sydney Women's International Film Festival, added,
“Right now, we are grieving a loss that words can’t hold. Please give us time and space as we process this unimaginable pain.”
Two days after sharing the news of Atreyu’s death, Clare McCann launched a fundraiser to preserve his body cryogenically. The actress shared that her son took his own life after being bullied at school. Per McCann, Atreyu, a child actor, was a victim of brutal bullying for months at a New South Wales School. Clare wrote,
“My 13-year-old son tragically took his own life after months of brutal bullying at a NSW public school. I’m urgently raising $300,000 to cryogenically preserve his body within the next 7 days — or the opportunity for him to live again will be lost forever.”
As of this writing, the GoFundMe Campaign has raised over $4,000 AUD against the goal of $300K. The actress is aiming to reach the goal within seven days to have her son’s body preserved.
Clare McCann alleged inaction from the school, Department of Education, and Children’s Services regarding her son’s bullying
The actress-filmmaker shared the tragic details of her son’s death while launching a GoFundMe campaign. According to her, Atreyu “took his own life after months of horrific bullying at his public school.” She further claimed that the authorities didn’t intervene despite her requests,
“I had begged the school, the Department of Education, and Children’s Services to intervene. I have medical records, psychologist reports, a formal PTSD diagnosis from his doctor, and emails proving I raised the alarm repeatedly. But nothing was done. No one stepped in. And now, my beautiful boy is gone.”
In her Instagram post, Clare McCann called Atreyu’s death her “worst nightmare,” asserting that it was “not his fault” and added,
“He was let down by the schooling system as he suffered horrendous amounts of bullying.”
McCann emphasized that they must reach the goal within the seven-day window, which is critical to preserve Atreyu’s body cryogenically. She stated that the donations would go towards taking care of the expenses of “immediate cryopreservation,” “legal transportation,” and “required medical and legal services for the procedure.”
At the same time, Clare McCann also aims to launch a trust in her son’s name “to protect his legacy.” She further assured, if the GoFundMe target exceeded, the rest of the donations would go toward the “national campaign for anti-bullying,” “legal actions against the institutions” for their lack of intervention, and supporting the families that have also been “impacted by systemic negligence.”
NSW-based Scarlett Wathen has organized the GoFundMe campaign for Atreyu on behalf of Clare McCann.
