A federal judge has threatened Damon Dash with arrest should he fail to comply with court orders amid his dispute with Josh Webber.
AllHipHop has reported that the Roc-A-Fella Records co-founder has been repeatedly disregarding court-ordered discovery deadlines amid his longtime legal spat with filmmaker Josh Webber over "unpaid judgments and asset disclosures."
The outlet has also reported that should Dash and his company, Poppington LLC, fail to comply with the discovery demands by May 9, he could be held in contempt and hit with a bench warrant to force him to show up in court.
The pair were first embroiled in a lawsuit in 2022, in which Damon Dash was ordered to pony up nearly $1 million in restitution to Webber over copyright infringement and defamation allegations. However, matters continued to escalate from there.
In March, Damon Dash was ordered to pay $4 million to the filmmaker after he was found guilty of defamation. Webber filed the suit over a year ago, claiming to have lost out on $4 million worth of work due to the remarks Dash made when he appeared on the Earn Your Leisure podcast in 2024.
At the time, the latter alleged that the movie producer had stolen from him during their previous spat over the 2019 film Dear Frank. According to HipHopDX, Dash said in the suit,
"I had a judgment. And I knew this dickhead Chris Brown and Josh Webber and Muddy Waters … Chris Brown the lawyer. I went through four trials with the same lawyer. What I lost was defamation because these guys trigger me and steal my sh*t … you think there is freedom of speech, it’s really not.”
Everything we know about the lawsuit against Damon Dash as his legal team sacks him as a client:
All Hip Hop has reported that the warning against Damon Dash comes amid his legal team's motion to withdraw from the case, citing his refusal to cooperate with them as well as his previously announced decision to file for bankruptcy soon.
At the time of writing, the outlet has reported that Dash has yet to respond to the discovery requests served on March 10, 2025. His attorneys informed the court that they have not been in contact with him and that he failed to provide them with the required financial information.
According to HNHH, he allegedly old his former legal team that "responding would be futile" and that they should "wait for the bankruptcy process" to begin.
As for Webber's legal counsel, they are petitioning the court to permit them to take hold of Damon Dash’s personal assets, including his film rights and other businesses. He is known for producing films like 2004's The Woodsman and 2018's Honor Up. However, the judge has ordered them to wait to file the request until ownership and turnover proceedings are resolved.
At the time of writing, Damon Dash has not filed for bankruptcy, and he remains without legal counsel.
