Cheney was surrounded by his family members while he took his last breath. As stated by his family, Cheney's cause of death included cardiac and vascular diseases, along with complications of pneumonia.
A statement released by his family read:
"His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him as he passed. Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing."
It continued:
"We are grateful beyond measure for all Dick Cheney did for our country. And we are blessed beyond measure to have loved and been loved by this noble giant of a man."

According to The Guardian, Harry Whittington, a Texas lawyer, political figure, and real estate investor, was accidentally shot by Dick Cheney in 2006 while they were on a hunting trip together. Harry, who died due to an illness on February 4, 2023, at the time, apologized to the then vice president, as the incident attracted a lot of unwanted public attention.
Harry Whittington, a Republican Party supporter, was 95 when he passed away. The news of his being shot by Cheney turned into an international matter, as it drew attention globally. The accident took place when Whittington, Cheney, and others went quail hunting at Armstrong Ranch post sunset. Dick accidentally and unintentionally shot Whittington while trying to shoot at a bird.
