On Friday, June 13, Jennifer Abbott, also known as Sarah Steinberg, was discovered unresponsive with stab injuries at her Mornington Place, Camden home. After the report, the authorities reached the scene and pronounced the film director dead.
Within a week of Abbott’s death, Metropolitan Police launched an appeal for witnesses regarding any information about the incident. For those unaware, an autopsy report released on June 15 confirmed “sharp force trauma” as the cause of death. According to BBC, an anonymous neighbor claimed that their son helped Jennifer Abbott’s niece break the door down. They said,
“My son broke the door down. We heard her niece shouting: 'Somebody help me, somebody help' and we went out and asked 'what's wrong?' She said: 'I haven't heard from my aunty in four days. Something's wrong — break the door down.'”
The neighbor added,
“I was holding the door open downstairs and my son was upstairs and then I heard her niece screaming and saying: 'Oh my God, she's been murdered'”
According to Daily Mail, the niece also found her aunt’s dog locked in the bathroom. Another person told the outlet that Jennifer Abbott’s mouth was taped and her house was ransacked. The Metropolitan Police has yet to comment on the circumstances in which Abbott was discovered.
Based on a June 18 press release, the authorities have already launched a probe regarding a missing Rolex watch with “a distinctive diamond encrusted face.” A friend of the deceased film director also told the outlet,
“Her niece said she had a lot of jewellery so the police need to check if anything else is missing.”
Commenting on the investigation around the missing watch, a neighbor said (via Daily Mail),
'I'm not surprised she had a Rolex. She was a woman of taste who liked to have a lot of nice things.’
Metropolitan Police has asked witnesses to come forward amidst the investigation into Jennifer Abbott’s murder
In a press release on Wednesday, the authorities revealed that the victim was last seen alive on June 10 by her neighbors. According to the police, Jennifer Abbott often walked her dog around the area near her residence, and it was seemingly the last activity she was seen engaged in.
The investigation around the motive of her murder is still in progress, but the Metropolitan Police is seeking information related to the missing Rolex. Chief Superintendent Jason Stewart appealed the witnesses in a statement that read,
“We are working closely with our colleagues in the homicide team to establish exactly what happened and it’s incredibly important that we hear from anyone who may have knowledge about how this awful death occurred.”
Stewart added,
“Someone must have seen or heard something and no piece of information is too small. It could be the crucial clue that leads us to identify Jennifer’s murderer.”
The Chief Superintendent also mentioned that the extra patrols would continue in the concerned area. He further stated that the investigation officers were still present at the crime scene. Stewart asked the witnesses “or who may be worried,” to contact the officers.
While the police are investigating the murder, a friend of the victim told Daily Mail about her being scared to sleep before the incident. She also said,
“I remember her [Jennifer Abbott] saying to me that once she had tried coming out of the flat and couldn't get out because of all the druggies out there.”
She added,
“It was a dark day when that happened. It's not about me, I feel for her and her son and her niece who had to see her like that. I can't believe I'm not going to see her again.”
Jennifer Abbott’s friend claimed that she would “miss her running around.” She claimed that Jennifer stayed indoors, “but she made herself known” and would talk to everyone.
