John Goodman, who suffered an injury in March while filming for his new movie, was spotted on the red carpet premiere of Smurfs, looking in good shape. Talking about his injury, he told The Hollywood Reporter:
"It was a real accident. I was wearing stocking feet, like I had been for the last week and a half. I was passing Tom, and my legs just went on the floor, and I came up parallel to the ground and landed on my hip. I tried to get back up, and when I couldn’t do that, I started fearing the worst. I didn’t know I had fractured it until we got X-rays."
John Goodman fractured his hip, which required him to undergo surgery the next day, and he was put on complete rest by the doctor for about a month.
The latest movie, set to release on July 18, is a reboot of the original franchise. It features Rihanna as the voice of Smurfette. It features a star-studded cast that includes Sandra Oh, Octavia Spencer, John Goodman, Nick Kroll, James Corden, Daniel Levy, Nick Offerman, and Amy Sedaris, among others.
More about John Goodman's weight loss journey
According to People, he has continued to shed weight, losing a total of 200 pounds over time, and appeared to be at his leanest at the Smurfs premiere.
John Goodman reportedly began his weight loss journey over a decade ago and has been slowly and steadily working to maintain his health over the years. According to ABC News, during his 2016 appearance on "Popcorn With Peter Travers," he talked about his significant weight loss:
"I just stopped eating all the time. I’d have a handful of food and it’d go to my mouth. I was just eating all the time. I was just eating alcoholically. In the old days, I would take three months out, lose 60 or 70 pounds, and then reward myself with a 6-pack of bud or whatever and just go back to my old habits. Then this time I wanted to do it slowly, move, exercise. I’m getting to the age where I can’t afford to sit still anymore. And it gives me the energy to work, ‘cause work is very draining.”
John Goodman added that, at one point, he did not want to look at himself in the mirror, which in turn helped him kick-start his fitness journey. He said:
"I just got tired, sick and tired of looking at myself. You’re shaving in the mirror and you don’t want to look at yourself. It gets dangerous."
In his 2023 interview with AARP, John Goodman shared how he achieved significant weight loss, stating that he first controlled the portions of the food he ate. He said:
"It was basically just portion control, and ‘I don’t need it. I was just shoving everything into my mouth. But I don’t want to be an example to anybody when the weight comes thundering back on — when I start eating Crisco out of the can with a spoon and a side of confectioner's sugar.”
According to New York Post, John Goodman worked with his personal trainer, Mackie Shilstone, to develop a workout regimen that suited him and adopted a Mediterranean diet that includes a variety of plant-based foods and healthy fats.
