Mark Duplass, best known for his role on The Morning Show, recently opened up about the ongoing toll of managing anxiety and depression. The 48-year-old actor spoke honestly to Page Six during the Gotham Television Awards. The star-studded event took place on Monday, June 2, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

“It’s a really complicated system of making sure you get enough sleep, making sure you get exercise every day, making sure I’m being really careful about the medication I take, never to miss it,” Duplass shared.

He revealed that he has remained on the same medication for nearly twenty years, calling it “a very fundamental critical part of my system.”

Duplass didn’t shy away from the emotional challenges either.

“It’s a delicate balance and ecosystem, I feel like I gotta make sure I keep showing up and working and it’s exhausting sometimes, but what choice do I have?” he said.

His openness echoed the vulnerability he has previously shared on Instagram, where he has spoken about his mental health journey over the years.

In October 2023, Mark Duplass used Instagram not just to share a photo, but to open up about his struggle with mental health.

"I have been struggling with anxiety and depression for most of my life. Sometimes it's just a subtle feeling that something deep inside is wrong. Sometimes it's a little stronger, and it affects my ability to function properly," he wrote.

His message grew more intense as he continued:

"And sometimes it comes barging through my front door and pins me to the ground for an unknown and seemingly insurmountable amount of time. When I see pictures of myself like this one, I can see the fear and sadness behind the smile. Even at my most 'happy' times."

Mark Duplass acknowledged the challenges of coping even with strong support systems in place.

"But at times like these, when the world is so deeply terrifying and saddening, it's a struggle just to stay on my feet and keep from crashing. And this is from the perspective of someone with years of experience dealing with this and excellent support systems... daily exercise, 8 hours of sleep, the right medication, a great therapist, a family who loves and supports me, the ability to eat healthy foods, etc. So I wanted to take a moment to send my love and support to all of you who may be dealing with something similar."

He concluded the message with an important reminder.

"I know we've heard all the platitudes before, but sometimes it's good to hear them again. You are not alone. There is help. This will pass. And if you find yourself descending to someplace new and scary, please text/call/chat '988' and there is someone available 24/7 to help."
"Sending you all a big blast of resilience, light and love," he ended the caption.

Mark Duplass reflects on his viral Instagram post and public image struggles

On December 13, 2023, actor Mark Duplass spoke with The New Yorker, just two months after his Instagram post about depression had sparked widespread attention. When asked what prompted the post, Mark Duplass admitted the decision wasn’t deeply calculated.

“The post was not a heavily considered moment in my life. It was more of a knee-jerk reaction,” he explained. “There’s this part of me that really wants to be known and to be seen for exactly who I am, and the more widely known my public image becomes there’s something small inside of me that wants to push back.” he shared.

Reflecting on the timing, Mark Duplass pointed to the way his role on The Morning Show shaped public perception.

“With ‘The Morning Show’ in particular, it’s, like, ‘Oh, my God, you’re with all these fabulous movie stars!’ That’s what led to picking that picture of me in the tuxedo. It just doesn’t feel truthful, you know?” explained the actor.
