What happened between Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey? Split explored as couple’s twins pay Father’s Day tribute

Television host Nick Cannon and superstar Mariah Carey’s children took to social media to wish their father on the occasion of Father’s Day on June 15. One of the former couple’s twins, Moroccan Cannon, posted a series of images of his father, and penned an emotional message for Cannon. The former couple’s daughter, Monroe Cannon, meanwhile, put up a story of herself with her father. She called him:

"[The] best dad in the whole world.”

Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey married in 2008. Their twins, who are now 14, were born in 2011. Cannon and Carey’s divorce was finalized in 2016, when the couple had already been living separately for two years. As per Cannon, his split with Carey arose out of the loss of his sense of identity in the marriage. Cannon has also spoken about the pressures of being married to one of the world’s biggest stars.

While speaking on the Ray Daniels Presents podcast in 2024, Cannon said,

“I would lay up at night thinking like, ‘is this who I am? Am I Mariah's man? Is that what my life is supposed to be?’…I’m confused about who am I in this space, and that's when you know I just had to kind of have some self-evaluation.”

Nick Cannon, who married Carey when he was 28 years old, also shared that getting married at a young age did not help his relationship. He reminisced,

“Going to myself with that pressure of, ‘who am I?’ Because, you know, I got married in my 20s still, you know what I mean to the biggest star in the world and my trajectory was here and then hers she's already in a different stratosphere.”

Despite feeling out of place in the marriage, Cannon repeatedly emphasized that Carey deserved someone who could support her in the way that she required.

In her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, published in 2020, Carey reflected on the end of her marriage to Nick Cannon. While the singer admitted that if the former couple had not got emotionally riled up towards the end of their relationship, they could have possible worked their problems and issues out. As per People magazine, Carey wrote,

“Honestly, I think Nick and I could have worked it out between the two of us, but egos and emotions got inflamed (which can translate into many billable lawyer hours, and ultimately it did). It was tough.”

Even so, Carey emphasized that protecting their family was the priority with both her and Cannon. She said,

“We both wanted to make sure everything was cool for our family. We will always be family, and we make it work.”

Even though their relationship could not stand the test of time, Carey emphasized that she and Cannon were well-matched. As per People Magazine, she wrote in her memoir,

“He was a good guy. He was faith-based. He was ambitious. He had been in the entertainment industry for a long time, so he understood the madness. He paid attention to me.”

Despite the former couple’s decision to peacefully co-parent their twins, their divorce ended up becoming heated. People noted that in December 2016, Carey’s fans waited for hours in the rain because the singer was late to the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree event filming. At the time, a source reported to the publication that Carey had been on the phone for five hours with her lawyers, going over the details of the divorce.
