Singer Robert Sylvester Kelly, aka R. Kelly, was taken to the hospital after he reportedly fell ill in his prison cell on June 13, 2025. The singer is presently detained at Butner Federal Correctional Complex in North Carolina.

According to the singer’s lawyer, Beau B. Brindley, the incident happened following an overdose of medicines, allegedly carried out by the staff members. Reports mentioned that the singer experienced light-headedness and problems with vision. As per Allhiphop, Brindley said:

“That means that, within two days of the filing of his motion, Bureau of Prisons officials administered an amount of medication that significantly exceeded a safe dose and caused Mr. Kelly to overdose, putting his life in jeopardy. hey gave him an amount of medicine that could have killed him.”

After he complained about the symptoms, R. Kelly was taken to Duke University Hospital. He stayed at the hospital for two days, where his condition was closely monitored. The news comes a few days after the prison officials were allegedly accused of conspiring to take the singer’s life. On June 10, 2025, he was shifted to an isolated holding.

His lawyer stated that the condition in the isolated cell was pitiable, as there were insects and pests around. The singer reportedly abstained from eating as he was afraid of being poisoned.

Following this incident, an emergency motion was filed, requesting a home confinement for R. Kelly. The motion also comprised a statement from Mikeal Glenn Stine, an inmate who alleged that Kelly’s life was in danger.

What did Jason Julien say about R. Kelly’s home detention request?

At the hospital, doctors noticed blood clots in R. Kelly's legs and lungs and advised surgery. However, prison authorities reportedly took him out of the hospital against medical advice.

According to Brindley, officers entered his room and removed him without his consent, despite doctors' warnings. As a result, Kelly didn’t receive the recommended surgery, which was considered critical for his condition.

Meanwhile, the claims about the precarious life threat to the singer have been criticised. As per a statement by attorney Jason Julien,

“Imagine a scenario where any and every incarcerated criminal could go back to the criminal court(s) that imposed a sentence of imprisonment upon them, allege that they fear imminent harm, and demand to be released from custody while the matter was investigated.”

The statement continued:

“Every convicted murderer, rapist, and terrorist will have a newfound shot at freedom. This is an impractical, unworkable, and unlawful scenario.”

Julien argued that the court couldn't consider Kelly's request because it didn’t have the authority to grant what he was asking for.

The attorney explained that Kelly was using the wrong legal process and had not followed the required procedures at the facility where he was being held. Moreover, there was no valid legal reason for the motion to be in that court.

Meanwhile, the home detention filing mentioned that Kelly’s life remained in danger as long as nothing was done. It claimed that more Aryan Brotherhood members were showing up at his facility, and at least one had allegedly been asked to harm him.
