Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders reportedly sustained an oblique injury during his practice on Wednesday, causing him to sit out the rest of the day.
The Daily Mail has reported that the NFL player was taken in for an MRI to examine the extent of the injury, causing him to miss out on the joint practice session with the Philadelphia Eagles.
According to CBS Sports, the rookie player may now miss the preseason bout between Cleveland and Philly this Saturday, though this has yet to be confirmed. The New York Post has reported that at one point, Jalen Hurts, the quarterback for the Eagles, was seen taking Sanders to the locker room on a golf cart.
TSN has reported that Shedeur Sanders was the key player in the Browns' 30-10 win over the Carolina Panthers in their first match in the preseason. At the time, he finished 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards, in addition to two touchdown passes and zero interceptions in the first half.
Everything we know about Shedeur Sanders' injury and how it will affect his schedule this preseason:
As reported by CBS News, Shedeur Sanders reportedly saw a hike in reps during his recent practice sessions earlier this week, though he had not made it to the team's official depth chart. ESPN has reported that the Colorado alumnus was previously left with an arm injury, but he seemed to be in good spirits during his recent practice.
Sanders was vying for a spot on the roster alongside Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, fellow rookie Dillion Gabriel, and Tyler Huntley. Only three quarterbacks are likely to make it, with Flacc reportedly guaranteed to be placed. The Daily Mail has reported that Pickett is seemingly second in line, given his past NFL experience.
As reported by The New York Post, however, Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed just this Wednesday that Shedeur Sanders is expected to kick off his second preseason game. Should fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel and seasoned player Kenny Pickett be unable to make it, given their hamstring injuries, Sanders will be called in.
“We need to get through the next couple of days from an injury standpoint and see where everybody is,” Stefanski said Saturday. “I’m really focused on all of our quarterbacks’ development and every single one of these reps last night, how important they are. So that’s what I’m focused on more than anything."
Shedeur Sanders, who is following in his father's footsteps in the NFL, recently addressed whispers about him being able to make it on his own:
“I just don’t think that deep into everything because there’s nothing you’re going to be able to control.,” Sanders said when questioned about being given a fair shot in the Browns four-way quarterback competition. “The most you can do is when you get your opportunity, when your number is called, perform, at least do the bare minimum and win the game. That’s what I feel like we did today and definitely things I’m able to grow off of.”
