On September 17, Jake Tapper reported that ABC had indefinitely canceled Jimmy Kimmel's show. According to him, Nexstar, which runs ABC-affiliated stations nationwide, is attempting to influence FCC commissioner Brendan Carr.US President Donald Trump appointed Carr in November last year.

Tapper has alleged that ABC's suspension comes after Carr threatened to take action against ABC and its parent company, Disney, over Jimmy Kimmel's remarks about Charlie Kirk's assassination.

Jake Tapper allegedly explains the reason behind ABC cancelling Jimmy Kimmel's show

Tapper took to X on September 18, with a video where he tried to make "sense" of the situation and said,

"In August, Nexstar, the largest owner of TV stations in the country, announced that they wanted to purchase their rival, Tegna, for more than $6 billion."

Tapper went on to explain how this purchase would "violate" current FCC rules, and that Brendan Carr, in May, announced that he "would be willing to entertain" changing those rules. Tapper then noted that Brendan Carr called on local TV stations to, as Tapper described, "reject the Jimmy Kimmel show."

Tapper mentioned that Nexstar's cancellation of Kimmel's show was announced "within hours" after Carr's please to TV stations.

Jake Tapper drops more hints

In another video shared by CNN on Instagram, Jake Tapper gave more details on ABC axing Jimmy Kimmel's show. Tapper alleged that both Disney and ABC are trying to appease the Trump administration and said,

"This all comes down to decision that will be made by Disney CEO Bob Iger. Disney, of course, owns ABC. Iger also finds himself in the position where he needs the Trump's administration's approval for a big business deal. Disney, Hulu, want to acquire Fubo. And he needs the Justic Department, the Trump Justice Department to approve that."

He then added that Bob Iger has to "make a decision" that could put him at "odds with the Trump administration" or challenge the principle of whether a government can force "private companies to cancel speakers and speech they don't like."

Jimmy Kimmel, in his Monday monologue, said that,

The "Maga gang" was "desperately trying to characterise this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them" and was also trying to "score political points from it."
