James Ransone, widely known for portraying the character of Ziggy Sabotka in David Simon's highly rated and critically acclaimed 2002 TV show The Wire, was found dead in Los Angeles on December 19, 2025.
Ransone, who was 46, died by suicide, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, as cited by The Sun. Besides starring in the second installment of The Wire in 2003, James Ransone has also appeared in other TV shows and films, including Bosch, It Chapter Two, and Poker Face.
The Black Phone actor, James Ransone, who is survived by his wife Jamie McPhee and two children, was a victim of sexual abuse while growing up, according to The Sun. Ransone also went through a period in his life when he had to deal with alcoholism and drug abuse. However, following his unfortunate passing, his wife Jamie took to Instagram and paid a tribute by sharing a picture of herself and James, with a caption that read:
"I told you I have loved you 1000 times before and I know I will love you again. You told me - I need to be more like you and you need to be more like me - and you were so right. Thank you for giving me the greatest gifts - you, Jack and Violet. We are forever."
According to her LinkedIn profile, James Ransone's wife, Jamie McPhee, who attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, works as a creative manager and consultant for a living. Previously, Jamie had worked as a manager and executive producer at Kenneth Cappello Studio, a managing director at Curtis Kulig Studio, and a managing partner at The 3125C Creative Agency.
After James Ransone's death, the actor's friends have launched a fundraiser on GoFundMe so that his wife, Jamie McPhee, can support herself and their two kids, Jack and Violet. So far, they have raised $44,618.

After paying tribute to her husband James on Instagram, McPhee received heartfelt messages and support from not only friends but also from other actors with whom James had worked. Poker Face star, Natasha Lyonne, wrote:
"Love you with everything I got and holding our beloved brilliant peejo with grace gratitude and cosmic peace into his life and the next - family forever beautiful jamie you are the best of us we love you."
Uncut James actress, Julia Fox, took to the comments section and wrote:
"Giving you the biggest virtual hug and I hope you are wrapped in warmth and love. We got your back with whatever you need."
