Johnny Depp recently got candid about how the Amber Heard defamation trial affected his personal and professional life, and he did not pull any punches against former friends and colleagues who he feels let him down.

Depp revealed in a candid interview with The Sunday Times earlier this month that he was feeling let down following the trial and had lost faith in people who were once close to him, including his former agent, Tracey Jacobs.

Depp, 62, did not mention Jacobs by name in the interview, but he mentioned a former agent of 30 years who testified in the 2022 trial and claimed that the actor was “difficult”.

He said during the interview,

"I was with one agent for 30 years, but she spoke in court about how difficult I was. That’s death by confetti, these fake motherf***ers who lie to you, celebrate you, say all sorts of horror behind your back, yet keep the money."

Many took his statement as a direct jab at Jacobs, who had testified via video deposition during a defamation trial in which Depp sued his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard, over a 2018 Washington Post article.

Jacobs, who worked for 30 years as Johnny Depp’s agent at United Talent Agency before being fired in 2016, gave a vastly controversial account when she testified (Variety). She said that Depp’s career was in a downward spiral as a result of his conduct while filming movies.

Jacobs said in her deposition that she attempted on multiple occasions to warn him of the consequences his actions were having on his career.

A look into Tracey Jacobs' controversial claims as Johnny Depp reflects on betrayal

In her statement, Tracey Jacobs stated Depp was autocratic and regularly turned up late, annoying his production crew and causing his reputation to tank after the rumors started to spread. She also said Johnny Depp’s drug and alcohol use was worsening, which made it more difficult to cast him in any role.

Jacobs said,

"His star had dimmed due to it getting harder to get him jobs. People were talking. The question was out there about his behavior."

She also claimed that Depp had at one point asked UTA for $20 million, which she suggested was related to financial difficulties. According to Variety, the agency refused to provide the money, but they assisted him in getting a loan from Bank of America.

His falling out with his former representatives was also exposed in prior legal fights, including a lawsuit against his former business manager Joel Mandel, who testified that Depp’s expenses had spun out of control after the success of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

Johnny Depp talked about feeling let down by people he thought he could trust in his recent interview. He remembered people who used to be around his kids, who shared personal milestones and yet were absent when he needed support at a time when his reputation was on the line.

He added,

"And, look, I understand people who could not stand up [for me], because the most frightening thing to them was making the right choice. I was pre-MeToo. I was like a crash test dummy for MeToo."

Despite the aftermath from the controversial case, Johnny Depp says he never really went away and that he is working hard on new films and brand collaborations.
