Michael Che is recounting Kanye West's apology to him following the latter's notorious pro-Trump monologue on SNL in 2018.
During his recent appearance on Thursday's episode of SiriusXM's The Bonfire, the SNL star recounted his confrontation with West, which was recorded and made it into his new documentary, In Whose Name?
For context, in 2018, Ye showed up as a musical guest on the renowned comedy show. Sporting a MAGA hat, he launched a pro-Trump, anti-Democrat tirade and accused the SNL cast of bullying him. He also attacked Black comedians for cracking jokes about Bill Cosby as he pointed at Che.
"I want to cry right now, black man in America, supposed to keep what you’re feeling inside right now,” West sang. “There’s so many times I talk to like a white person about this and they say, ‘How could you like Trump? He’s racist,’” he added. “Well, if I was concerned about racism I would’ve moved out of America a long time ago.”
Michael Che later confronted him backstage, as seen in the documentary that came out just last week. He called Ye "foul" for passing such comments on live television.
“Why would you do that to me? I work here,” Che said in the now-viral scene. “I work here. Like, come on, man. We treat everyone that comes in like family, and you gonna sell us out? Like, that’s f–ked up, man … We look up to you, we love you. What you got against us?”

The Wrap has reported that, in Michael Che's recent podcast appearance, he explained that he didn't go on to see Kanye West for a while until an SNL taping in December 2019. The latter was attending Eddie Murphy’s episode at the time.
“I was running around crazy and people were just in my dressing room kind of using it as their green room,” Che recalled. “And I couldn’t, I had no place to really go. And I’m walking through the hallway and he’s coming out the elevator bay and as soon as he sees me, he goes, ‘I owe you an apology.’”
Michael Che, a Weekend Update co-anchor, went on,
“I didn’t even know if he remembered that that happened because he was saying so much. And he was like, ‘I owe you an apology.’ We talked … I never brought it up again.”
The comedian also told the co-hosts Big Jay Oakerson and Robert Kelly that he never wanted it to look like he was "bullying" Kanye, but was just curious about his intentions:
“I was literally like, ‘What’s going on man? Why would you do that?’” Che continued. “Because I remember like everybody was … trying so hard to accommodate him.”
Elsewhere in the segment, Michael Che also said that he and his SNL peers noticed Ye's unusual behaviour ahead of his 2018 rant.
"It didn't seem like he was his normal self," the comedian reflected. "Because he'd been at the show a million times. So it seemed like he was kind of not behaving like himself. So we were just like, 'What's going on?' We were trying very hard."
