Actor Gary Busey has been sentenced to two years of probation after pleading guilty to criminal sexual contact. The case dates back to a 2022 horror convention in New Jersey, where several women accused him of inappropriate touching during a meet-and-greet event. The court delivered its decision on September 18, 2025, during a virtual hearing.
The 81-year-old actor faced legal and personal challenges throughout the case. His lawyer cited health concerns, including early dementia and mobility issues, when asking for a fine instead of probation. However, the judge considered his past legal record before deciding on the sentence.
This case has also led to additional civil lawsuits against Busey, as two women continue to seek damages in New York related to the same convention incident. The actor, who once earned an Academy Award nomination, is now facing the consequences of his actions in both criminal and civil court.
What happened at the 2022 convention, and how did it affect Gary Busey?

The case began in August 2022, when Monster-Mania Convention was in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, according to a report published on People on September 21, 2025. Gary Busey also attended the event and was reportedly touching several of the female fans inappropriately as he signed autographs and took photos. It was reported that he rubbed the buttocks of at least two women and made other unwanted physical contact.
There was also a probable cause statement that stated that Busey got close to the chest of a female and made remarks about her body before trying to unstrap her bra strap. Three females were forwarded with complaints, and this resulted in an investigation by the local authorities.
Busey was apprehended soon after the episode at a neighboring hotel. He has, at the time, rejected any wrongdoing and informed TMZ that the claims were false. But close to a year later, he confessed to the case and pleaded guilty in July 2025.
The court’s decision and sentence
On September 18, 2025, Superior Court Judge Gwendolyn Blue gave Gary Busey a two-year probation sentence. The judge observed that the decision was affected by his past criminal history, which entailed probation on trespass and disorderly conduct cases in 2007 and a hit-and-run case in 2021.
His lawyer requested only a fine, citing Busey’s health conditions, but the court instead ruled that he would be placed on probation. Gary Busey has an option of seeking early termination after 1 year on the condition of abiding by the probation conditions as indicated in the sentence.
Had full justice been served, Gary Busey might have faced up to five years of probation along with a $500 fine. His attorney later stated that Busey was relieved the case had concluded and that he could move forward without additional publicity.
