Singer-songwriter Lorde is all set to release her upcoming album, Virgin, her first in four years, next month. While promoting the album, the musician who was born in New-Zealand reminisced about her experience of watching the s*x tape that actress Pamela Anderson made in 1995 with her then-husband, musician Tommy Lee. According to Billboard, the former couple made the clandestine video, which got leaked, during their honeymoon in Mexico.
During a candid conversation with Rolling Stone, Lorde, who began taking psychedelic therapy treatments in 2022, recounted looking up the infamous Pamela Anderson-Tommy Lee s*x tape after her second psychedelic therapy session. The singer, who’s real name is Ella Yelich-O’Connor, told Rolling Stone that she didn’t really know why she wanted to watch the tape, but ended up watching the entire video. Of the experience, she said,
“I found it to be so beautiful. And maybe it’s f*cked up that I watched it, but I saw two people that were so in love with each other, and there was this purity. They were jumping off this big boat.… They were like children. They were so free. And I just was like, ‘Whoa. Being this free comes with danger.’”

During the introspective interview, Lorde examined this notion of freedom, and added,
“It feels worse to keep it all bolted down. But God, of course, I’ve had many moments in the last couple years where I’m like, ‘If I could just have a nice normal life where you don’t elicit any strong reactions from anyone.’ But that’s not my path.”
Lorde opened up about taking psychedelic therapy treatments
During her conversation with Rolling Stone, the artist confessed that her MDMA and psilocybin therapy, which still hasn’t been approved by the FDA, has helped her with a variety of issues. The treatment, which she began taking primarily for helping overcome her years long stage fright, worked better than what she imagined. She said,
“I was touring without stage fright for the first time.”
Rolling Stone noted that while she earlier would cordon herself off in her hotel room before playing on stage, afraid of having a panic attack, the singer could now let loose and feel free mentally and physically.
In an earlier interview with Document Journal, Lorde revealed how psychedelic therapy has helped maintain her well-being. She said,
“Psychedelic therapy, honestly, is a huge cornerstone to my well-being and practice and just keeps me alive to what’s out there and what’s possible. I’m obviously really fortunate not to have the genes of an addictive personality”

As per University of Cambridge, scientists and doctors are looking at psychedelic medicine as a genuine method to treat depression, anxiety, PTSD. Dr. Ayla Selamoglu, who researched psychedelic medicine at Cambridge, said,
“Psychedelics offer something different. Something more transformative. They don’t create dependency, and you don’t have to taper off them. In some patients, one or two sessions is enough to make a profound, lasting difference to their wellbeing.”
Continuing, Dr. Selamoglu added,
“They act on the serotonin system, with some effects on dopamine and glutamate systems. They may improve mood and creativity, and promote neuroplasticity.”
For Lorde, psychedelic therapy has helped her negotiate with her persistent eating disorder as well. She explained to Rolling Stone that she had a obsession related to counting calories, and her self-hatred made her cover the mirrors in her house up. According to the singer, psychedelic therapy helped her confront her physicality. She said,
“[I’ve] been in the same body [my] whole life. I understood it. I was like, ‘These arms climbed the jungle gym. And they held an award on a TV show.’ I understood the whole spectrum of it and began to enjoy the complexity and ruggedness.”
Virgin, Lorde’s 4th studio album is all set to release on June 27, 2025.
