Rocky IV star Dolph Lundgren, who was inflicted with cancer almost a decade ago, took to Instagram on November 26 to reveal that he is finally well again. The actor, who was initially told he only had 3 years to live, revealed to his well-wishers that he is "finally cancer-free with gratefulness and excitement for a bright future."
He also revealed that he underwent lung ablation to decimate tumor tissues. Per Mayoclinic, Lunch ablation is a relatively new procedure, and it relies on heat or cooling mechanisms to destroy the cancerous tissue. It is a minimally invasive procedure, and its goal is to:
"preserve as much lung function as possible by only destroying the tumor and a healthy rim of tissue around the tumor, subsequently not altering a person's breathing capacity post-ablation."
Dolph Lundgren says doctors once gave him the wrong treatment, notes it wasn't "looking good" for him
In his video on Instagram, Swedish-born Dolph Lundgren, said from his hospital bed, clad in a cap and gown:
"Here I am at UCLA, I’m about to go in and get rid of that last tumor. Since there are no cancer cells in my body anymore, I guess I’ll be cancer-free so I’m looking forward to this procedure."
He then revealed that he was all set to be treated with a lung ablation, before continuing:
"It’s been a rough ride and really taught me how to live in the moment and enjoy every moment of life. I mean, it’s the only way to go."
Dolph Lundgren also took to Instagram stories to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers, writing:
"Thank you for all of your wonderful messages and supportive comments. It’s gonna take a little more to break me. I must break you."
Dolph Lundgren revealed his infliction to the world in 2023, but was diagnosed in 2015 when the doctors found a tumor in his kidney. They were able to extract it, leaving Lundgren free of the ailment for five years.
Then, after his remission, in 2020, six more tumors were discovered. He said that at the time, he was told he had only "two to three years" left to live.
During an interview on In Depth With Graham Bensinger, Dolph Lundgren divulged that specialists found a "few more tumors around the area" that year, and eradicated six more. However, one tumor was as big as the "size of a lemon" in his liver, and doctors were unable to operate and take it out.
He then revealed that he was being subjected to further treatment, noting that by 2022, most of the tumors had withered by "about 90%" and that at the time, he was getting the scar tissue from the tumors taken out. He told Fox News Digital in January this year:
"It wasn't looking good. I mean, there was a doctor in London who basically told me you should stop working and spend more time with your family. Then I realized it was serious."
However, he claimed that his caretakers were "giving me the wrong treatments because they hadn't really checked on all the biopsies."
"I got a second opinion from a UCLA doctor, and she went back and looked at all the biopsies, and she said, ‘Well, you know, this is a different mutation than what they said,’" Lundgren recounted. "They hadn't checked it. They just assumed. As soon as I got the new medication, I started getting better. And that was all [2022]."
He went on:
"And then last year, I removed all those tumors. They freeze them out or use radiation. And then, you know, now I'm living a normal life, I would say. Except I gotta go and do a scan every three months. But everything else is kind of back to normal. So, it was scary and magical at the same time."
Dolph Lundgren's video on Instagram drew the love and support of several of his fellow actors, including Chuck Norris, Ian Ziering, and more. Apart from his roles as Ivan Drago in Rocky IV and Creed II, Lundgren is also known for having starred in Masters of the Universe and The Punisher.
