According to The Guardian, the former three-time Super Bowl champion, Shannon Sharpe, has been fired from ESPN less than two weeks after he settled a lawsuit with an unnamed former girlfriend who accused him of r*pe during their relationship.
The clip of Mo'Nique giving him advice during her appearance on his podcast last year is once again circulating on the internet in light of recent events. In the clip, Mo'Nique, who appeared on the "Club Shay Shay" podcast last January, can be seen advising Shannon Sharpe to avoid dating women in their twenties or thirties and instead focus on dating someone closer to his age who will prioritize him. In the clip, she said:
"Let me tell y'all, what Shannon needs..let me tell y'all what my baby needs. He needs an girl who bakes good cakes, who makes smothered turkey wings and who will rub his feet at nighttime. You don’t need no 26-year-old girl, you don’t need no 36-year-old girl. Take your old a*s and get you an old b*tch out there that can love you old.”

Shannon Sharpe was accused of r*pe by a former girlfriend back in April of this year. Since then, Sharpe has been on leave from the "First Take" morning show, where he appeared as one of the weekly commentators. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Shannon Sharpe had previously denied the claims made by the woman, who is named in official documents as Jane Doe. In his statement, he further said:
"My statement is found here and this is the truth. The relationship in question was 100 percent consensual. At this juncture I am electing to step aside temporarily from my ESPN duties. I will be devoting this time to my family, and responding and dealing with these false and disruptive allegations set against me."
The lawsuit, which was filed in Nevada State Court, sought $50 million in damages and claimed that she experienced "pain and suffering, psychological and emotional distress, mental anguish, embarrassment, and humiliation,” for which she sought compensation. Three months after the initial charge was filed against him, Shannon Sharpe settled the lawsuit with the woman earlier this month.
According to The Guardian, no details about the settlement have been released, although his attorney issued a statement saying that the lawsuit has now been dismissed with prejudice. It read:
"I’m pleased to announce that we have reached a mutually agreed upon resolution. All matters have now been addressed satisfactorily, and the matter is closed. The lawsuit will thus be dismissed with prejudice."
According to The Athletic, it was announced on Wednesday that ESPN had parted ways with Shannon Sharpe, although no official statement had been released about the matter.
The clip of Mo'Nique advising Shannon was posted on X (formerly Twitter) by @DiaryOfkeysus. Now, this has prompted many fans to agree with the comedian.
Shannon Sharpe later issued a statement regarding his firing from ESPN. In his statement, Sharpe said that he enjoyed his time at ESPN and added that he is at peace with their decision. He also mentioned that he wished the announcement had come next week so as not to overshadow his brother, Sterling Sharpe, who will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday.
