Mase, rapper and podcaster, responded to Paul Pierce's opinion on why so many Black players in the league are dating white women on a recent episode of The Truth After Dark with Paul and Azar. Though Pierce was laughing while commenting, it wasn't well received and received multiple backlash.
A topic that many people view as delicate was posed to Paul Pierce during the Truth After Dark: Why do so many Black NBA players end up dating white women?
Pierce didn't think twice about answering, providing a direct response that subsequently generated internet discussion. He answered:
"I honestly think that maybe they appreciate more and they apologize more."
Pierce said while laughing:
"They don't mind being held accountable."
Co-host and viewers responded strongly to the former Boston Celtics player's remarks, which seemed to be a combination of a joke and an observation. While some people laughed along with him, others wondered if his opinion was more than just a joke.
The show's host even intervened to control any backlash by bringing up the fact that Pierce dates Black women, presumably to protect him from accusations of hypocrisy or prejudice.
This wasn't the first time an NBA player brought up the issue of interracial relationships in the league. It was already discussed by other former players, such as Dennis Rodman.
Rapper Mase responds to the former athlete’s explanation
Rapper Mase couldn't contain his laughter as he talked about the viral video of Pierce on It Is What It Is. He reacted not only with laughter but also with unease, particularly given his current situation. Mase disclosed that his wife could hear him recording the podcast episode as he was recording it from an Airbnb while he waited to move into his new house.
He joked:
"When she’s gone, I'll be talking again."
Treasure 'Stat Baby' Wilson and Cam'ron, co-hosts, also laughed along, emphasizing how uncomfortable the situation was. Cam'ron, renowned for his unfiltered remarks, pointed out that Pierce had been alluding to Mase's cautious manner in his initial remarks.
Cam'ron took advantage of the occasion to make light of the circumstance and draw attention to Mase's ironic remark.
He laughed and explained:
"So basically, what's going on is, Mase's wife is my sister, [Maurice Clarett] Mo's wife is my sister, 'cause I love my brothers' wives, everything, but this what Paul Pierce was talking about. Look at them n****s."
He wasn't finished yet. Cam'ron cautioned Mase against acting tough on camera for the show as he attempted to maintain a straight face.
"Don't be tough for me, Murda. Keep it–don't be tough for me. Don't do it for me. You better calm the f*ck down, and don’t be tough for me."
The group started to steer the conversation in a more introspective manner as the laughter subsided. Mase made an effort to convey a viewpoint that seemed both diplomatic and personal, obviously aware of his wife, who was nearby, acting as his audience.
"When it comes to women, I think women kinda act the way a man allows them to act, if I can say that? Yeah, that's exactly what I believe. I believe there's some women that'll act the way you need 'em to act. And, if you get them, it's the terms that you get 'em on, right?"
Another guest on the show, a former football player, Maurice Clarett, offered his thoughts on Pierce's opinion. He suggested that maybe Pierce's dating experience was simply different. He said:
"Maybe Paul just chose the wrong Black women. Or maybe his approach with women is a little bit different. I don't know how he handle women, or how he let women handle him."
